My best friend’s brother got fired from a position on a cruise ship during a cruise. I’m pretty sure they left him at the next port of call.
He was working as a nurse on a Caribbean cruise ship, tending to basic medical and first aid needs of the passengers and crew. There were a few nurses on the ship, and at any given time at least one of them would be on call. My friend’s brother got drunk while on call, and turned up to an incident intoxicated. Needless to say, that’s a firing offense.
It depends on the companys policy. Generally they do not like firing people midway through a cruise esp if its an essential person, so I supppose they wait for the end of a cruise.
Could be. But it was nice that BOTH the freaking out guy AND the captain were trying to outclass each other and make the best out of an awkward situation. If only more of lifes awkward situations were handled that way, rather than the usual other way around.
You could be confined to quarters until the next port. Normally (it’s probably maritime law) you would have to be provided with a ticket to your country of origin by the vessel.
My rogue captain story - in those days the rate was 1USD per mile, plus ticket to either country of origin or return ticket to first port. I was looking to get $3,000+ USD. Our deal was country of origin (England) with our final destination being somewhere in Italy. When we arrived in Gibralter smarty pants captain signed us two crew off the boat without our knowlege (Gibralter is English so technically speaking …) and provided us with squat! He signed on two loose women for the rest of the trip.
It was a dirty and dishonourable trick - but immigrationally (is that a word?) correct. I contacted the owner and he immediately wired me my dues and air expenses explaining that the captain told him none of this and was trying to collect our pay.
Many thanks once again to my mate Arturo for crafting my appeal letter in fine Italian.
I believe signing the Captian’s book happend at the end of the voyage. It was saying that you had been paind in full and the the Captian had no oblligation to you.
The signing of articles came about because of shanghighing (sp)
I had a great uncle (or half uncle or some such) that was shanghied?
Well, maybe not really shanghied, but he was in the merchant marines, they pulled into some major far eastern port (forget which now) and he was never seen again.
