I remember a WoF final round that pissed me off. The contestant got the word right away and said it exactly how I say the word, but the time kept passing.

It was CRAYON. He said “cran” (like the first part of “cranberry”). He said it two more times, looking more WTF each time, until it dawned on him and he said “crayyyyyyyyy-onnnnn???” which finally counted. Goddamn that annoyed me and I know if it’d been me, I would’ve kept repeating it, they’d have the buzzer, reveal the word, and I’d be all, “THAT’S WHAT I SAID!” and then a fistfight would break out between me and Pat Sajak and things woulda gotten awkward.

> I teach a packaged phonics course to my students, and one thread throughout the course is homophones (which they infuriatingly call “sound-alike words.” Fuck you phonics people, they’re HOMOPHONES). I live in the South, and for almost all my students, “pen” and “pin” are pronounced similarly–but that homophone pair doesn’t show up in the lessons.

> What does show up is “farther” and “father.” Which makes the room exploded in laughter. Gives me a chance to show them where Boston is on the map, though.

oh man, stupid textbook publishers and their inane need to rename everything! Why?? Eight year olds know they are learning new things, they are in a prime time brain development wise to learn the proper terminology, but no, we have to have some cutesy new word that’s going to make grammar and math that much harder in high school because they have to relearn everything from the start instead of having known the term for years. (and of course the high school teachers have no clue which packaged course they learned from because the schools change all the time.) grrr.

oh and I’ve never heard of the gulf/golf merger before either. That’s a new one.
