I believe the OP is referring to the global South, not the American south. We sometimes let Pat Buchanan out of his cage and give him 5 minutes of air time. The rest of the world can then be thankful that he didn’t become president and never will. That’s what we’ve done for you lately. ---

According to the Lonely Planet guidebook to Indonesia (the edition from about 12 years ago), the Indonesian people still remember the U.S. favorably from the time following WWII when the Dutch were trying to reassert themselves in their former colonial-master role. The U.S. government persuaded the Dutch to back off. ---
