Having a VW Beetle as the family car in a family of 5. That and communal living - we didn’t live in a commune exactly but there were times other families either lived with us or mooched off us and invaded our privacy all the time thanks to my stupid hippy parents and their stupid hippy friends. ---

Paperback copies of _The Hobbit, Stranger in a Strange Land,_ and _Dune_ with multiple pages dog-eared. Perhaps _Be Here Now_ by Baba Ram Dass–I’m not rememering the era. R. Crumb pornography (not appropriate for children, but present at my babysitter’s pad nonetheless). ---

Mostly I remember that in spite of all the smiley faces and flowers, those were _NOT_ happy times and by and large, hippies were not happy people. I remember Eva. (Once more for good measure: BITCH!) Today’s popular view not withstanding, you really could bathe regularly if you wanted to and most did. ---

Mateus. Empty Mateus bottle covered in candle wax covered in dust. Sensitivity training. People who would have made it to Woodstock if their parents had let them. People hitching to SF. People getting picked up in Iowa while hitching to SF. Blotter vs. windowpane. Black beauties, reds, yellow jackets, 'ludes, … Condescendingly: “Yeah man, that’s your bag, but maybe if you were a little less uptight you could dig where I’m coming from.” And most important, The Pill. ---

I went through junior high and high school in the early 1970s, and it was just amazing how angry my parents got about hair. A couple of times my father did go truly ballistic over that. Also anything relating to psychedelic culture was verboten. Thankfully, though, the folks greatly lightened up later on. Long hair was generally assumed to be dirty as well, by those who disapproved of it. On a visual and more mainstream note, I remember a lot of bright colors generally. You can actually see that aesthetic in many Star Trek:TOS episodes, which were made around that time. ---

I remember that art, clothing, and decoration styles from non-Western cultures were quite popular, and some people took up Buddhism. It was also not uncommon to attempt to give one’s room an exotic look by putting a colorful batik printed sheet on the ceiling. ---

Happenings - The subject of many songs (i.e. Buffalo Springfield’s, For What It’s Worth), Lennon and Yoko’s Bed-in, etc. The happenings I remember were just an excuse for a bunch of dopers to get together to load up and get it on. U of Wisconsin had an annual smoke-in for many, many years, I hear it’s still going on. I know it was about 10 years ago, I was there. Then there were the love-ins, basically just an excuse to get stoned and have group sex. I can’t remember all the kinds on “ins” there were, but there were a bunch of them. Army surplus coats were in style. Especially ones with all kinds of embroidered hippie related patches. I lived in the Midwest, if you happened to have visited CA or CO, you were considered to be more “experienced”. ---

ccwaterback, they more or less ran the smoke-fest out of town a few years ago. The same guy keeps trying to organize the event out on a farm in the county or some such, but it’s really just a shadow of its former self. To tell the truth, I can’t remember if they actually held it this past year. Sorry for the hijack. Let’s see, hippies, 60s, Hmmm… How about Ban the Bomb, make love, not war, Drugs&Sex&Rock&Roll. ---
