For the love of all that is sane and intelligent, don’t give that stupid MTG any more attention than she’s already getting by her being purposely “controversial” and eating the low hanging fruit. It would simply waste everyone’s time in what should be a concentrated effort to get to the bottom of the Republicans senate and congressional involvement (the main reason that R’s don’t want to have an investigation.)
Why does Congress need to investigate this at all? There is an executive branch who has the duty to take care that the laws are faithfully executed. We have a powerful group in the FBI who has law enforcement powers to uncover any wrongdoing. Why is that not sufficient?
Congressional investigations are almost exclusively when an investigation is needed of the executive branch. That is simply not present here. Biden will not sweep anything under the rug so as not to embarrass Trump or other Republicans. Let him do his job.
It seems that the only purpose for this is to act as a Dem campaign commercial. Offer the dumbest person who was in the Capitol immunity, put him on television, and let him be questioned by Dem congress people and have him spew the dumbest QAnon theories ever. Then the Dems will make that individual the face of the Republican party and representative of all conservatives and Republicans.
Congress itself was attacked, and some members of Congress were in communication with the insurrectionists prior to January 6th. The Insurrection is literally in the House and you are recommending that the House ignore that? No, the opposition to a commission is because the Republicans know that it will make a lot of their members and their Dear Leader look very very bad, and they want to avoid that. If the truth will hurt a party’s election chances then the truth should hurt their chances.
If their goal is to find out who did what when and where, then they have the greatest, most professional law enforcement agency that has ever existed already investigating it. They would not be “ignoring” it in the slightest.
You want the Biden DOJ to be the ones investigating sitting GOP congress persons? You are ok with the Biden DOJ arresting MTG or Kevin McCarthy, or Ted Cruz or Josh Hawley? You think that’s the best way to clean Congress of it’s insurrection problem? 33 Benghazi hearings, but an actual attack on our Country and Constitution by our own citizens is unnecessary for Congress to look into? Ridiculous and transparent. Republicans are allergic to accountability for their actions. Always have been, always will be.
If the DOJ has probable cause to believe that any one of those individuals committed felonies and a judge agrees with that determination, then I have absolutely no problem with their arrests.
But again, the Benghazi hearings were an investigation by the legislative branch of the executive branch. That is not necessary here where the executive branch has no conflicting interests and would in all likelihood just love to prove some sort of Republican conspiracy.
So first the GOP said the attack was by antifa and the left. Now they are saying an investigation isn’t necessary and it would hurt them in the election. Were they lying then or are they lying now? They are cowards that are afraid of the very bad things that they and some of their colleagues were doing to incite these people leading up to January 6th. Why be so afraid of the truth, and why are so many people willing to give them a pass? You are literally arguing that Congress cannot investigate an attack on themselves. That they cannot find out how much our Constitution remains in danger? I never ever want to hear anything about patriotism or personal responsibility or back the blue from a Republican again.
I know you feel strongly about this, but again, we have the best, most professional law enforcement agency in the world able to investigate this and determine the truth of your assertions.
And that is consistent with our separation of powers. Do you believe that the Biden Administration would sweep things under the rug? If not, then leave law enforcement to, well, law enforcement.
Congress has the right to police itself and its members. I know you feel strongly about not wanting any Republican to face consequences, but it is absolutely shameful to work to cover up an attack on the very seat of Democracy in America. Electoral success is not more important than the continued existence of self government and self determination in our Country.
I’m not suggesting any such “cover up.” Please re-read my posts.
I didn’t say you were. The GOP Rep calling it a “tourist visit” is though, so is the whole party blocking us from finding out who was responsible for causing this to happen. Congress represents us and only 35 senators out of 100 were enough to say, no America, you do not have a right to know what happened when our supporters tried to overthrow the Constitution. That is a travesty.
But that is not what they are saying. The DOJ is fully capable of investigating. The GOP is saying that they don’t want a partisan “investigation” of this which will turn into a Dem campaign commercial. If the DOJ investigation finds that felonies were committed by Republican members of Congress, then that is its own campaign commercial. They issue reports. The report might say that Rep. X did such and such and although it may fit the technical definition of a violation of statute Y, we decline to prosecute because our policy suggests that it is appropriate not to in this situation. That is another campaign commercial.
Let the professionals make a reasoned determination of criminal activity according to neutral policies about law enforcement. Even if Congress voted unanimously not to have a congressional investigation, the executive department will still do its duty.
Come on. It was a bipartisan commission where the Democrats gave the GOP just about everything they asked for and still voted against it. GOP members that voted against Impeachment number 2 were saying we needed an investigation before we impeach, now they vote against the investigation. If the facts and the truth are damaging to the GOP electoral prospects and are so embarrassing to GOP supporters, then SO WHAT? That doesn’t mean you hide from the truth. The truth is not about a campaign commercial, its the truth. If the truth means your side will likely lose the next election then GOOD, that is how it should be. Don’t incite your supporters to attack the government and you won’t be someone who incited their supporters to attack the government.
Instead of a bipartisan commission, isn’t it better to have a nonpartisan investigation done according to neutral principles of law enforcement?
And even then, when the report is out, Congress can still censure or expel a member who did untoward things, even if that doesn’t rise to the level of criminal charges.
Everything you want will be provided by a DOJ investigation. If Trump was still president (under which there would not have been a Jan 6 riot, but bear with the hypo) then I would agree that a congressional investigation is necessary because you cannot trust the executive to police itself. That is why we had Watergate hearings, Iran Contra hearings, Whitewater hearings, etc. But when you have an executive with no such conflicts and probably would secretly love to indict a bunch of Republicans in Congress, why the need for an additional partisan (even a bipartisan investigation is partisan in that you will have a majority and dissenting reports, neither of which will be fully accurate) investigation by people who are not near the quality of the FBI?
Do you think the GOP would have voted against the commission had we been attacked by BLM on January 6th? If they would have had a different answer, don’t you think that is a huge problem?
(bolding mine)
So who is going to prepare this report?
The FBI doesn’t prepare reports of its findings relating to its investigations. In fact, exactly the opposite. If charges are brought, those stand for themselves as evidence of the work they did. If no charges are brought, they mostly remain silent.
They do well in their performative role to bring individuals to justice. But they have no role of any kind to prepare a “lessons learned” report for the benefit of avoiding such a situation from ever occurring again. I think this is the overarching importance of having an independent body do an investigation.
I think that some more details would have to be fleshed out, but I could see the possibility that as Biden has shown strong support for the BLM movement that there might be fear that he wouldn’t play fair in that investigation. I’m not saying that I would automatically support an independent investigation, but depending on the ins, outs, and what have yous, I might for that reason. I think that is consistent with my earlier posts.
There is no reason that they couldn’t. Congress could request it or Biden could order it.
Or we could leave them to do the work they are meant to do – they’re rather busy at the moment – and let Congress do its customary work instead.
Wow. Democratic constituency = commission to investigate. Republican constituency = no commission needed.
So if Trump had won are you saying that the GOP would be supporting a commission into January 6th because they couldn’t trust Trump’s DOJ to investigate his own supporters?
The GOP has created a heads we win, tails you lose scenario. That is no way for a democratic society to function.
