Just wanted to give some follow-up to this thread, and also thank the good folks who responded after I last replied.
I ended up going with a broken leg, fractured wrist, several broken ribs, and – the masterstroke of this thread – pneumonia. It was surprisingly easy to add the pneumonia to this guy’s scenes, peppered throughout several episodes: just a matter of coughing and having various staffers (and the patient) make reference to the pneumonia being caused by the chest bandages/his hindered lung activity.
I’ll be keeping the rest of your maladies and injuries on file in my noggin, because my characters do tend to end up in the hospital quite a lot. You never know when this stuff will come in handy for a sadistic creator.
