> People who stand in line as if the person in front of them has ebola. Man up and tighten that line!

People who get to the cash register and park their shopping cart somewhere in Kansas. I have no clue how much you have and how many bags you need. And all that back and forth motion is making me seasick.

Also, people who dump things anywhere but where they belong. I spend half my time doing cleanup and returns. Either put them back where they belong or give them to the cashier. And don’t complain to me when there’s only one cashier working.

This is such a good one! A high school friend of mine would do this all the time, but often the ‘one-up’ wouldn’t really be a one-up, and instead paled in comparison to the original situation. It was really bizarre. Several of us thought it would be great to have this serve as the inspiration for an irreverent\* greeting card line:

**Front of card** : So sorry to hear that mysterious pain in your stomach turned out to be an aggressive uterine cancer that might kill you, or at the very least, will certainly prevent you from being able to have any more children.

**Inside of card** : I know just what you’re going through: when McDonald’s stopped serving the McRib in my area, and I knew I might never be able to have another one, it was so, so hard to keep getting up in the morning. I’m sure you’ll be able to take a page from my book and pull through this.

There may be some exceptions to this. From a cable show episode I recently saw, I have reason to believe that ‘apartment’ can also denote a very high end co-op or condo unit in NYC.

People who think the rules simply cannot be applied to them.

The rule is no cell phone usage in the library. Just now a person answers the cell phone. Librarian says “No cell phones in the library.” Person keeps talking. “No cell phones in the library.” Person: This is important! So freaking what? No cell phones in the library.

And all those who think the store’s closing time doesn’t apply to their need to come in two minutes before closing and fill up a cart and expect their purchase to be rung up because “I really need these things. I couldn’t get here earlier.”

I see someone who’s never been to Germany, where the term “6:30ish” doesn’t exist, and 6:30 means means exactly 6:15.

In the US, I would say that “6:30ish” means between 6:15 and 6:45. And it’s your own damn fault if you tell someone to show up within the range of 6:30 and you aren’t ready for them by 6:30.

I know people like to think that all the hippies poofed out of existence in 1972, but they’re still around.

The usage is somewhat regional but basically “apartment” vs. “condo” or “co-op” are talking about different aspects of the thing. “Apartment” is a style of dwelling in a multi-unit building, whereas “condo” and “co-op” refer to legal terms of ownership. Around here “apartment” does tend to connote a rental but I often hear New Yorkers (real life, not on TV) talking about their “apartments” which they do, in fact, own.

My wife hates being around anyone who chews gum. Unfortunately, I am hopelessly addicted to nicotine gum.

Fortunately, she hates being around smokers more than she hates being around gum chewers.

For New Yorkers (and I’ve been one my whole life, and I’ve never lived in anything but an apartment, ever, in my more than 50 years on the planet), an “apartment” is any dwelling that is PART of a larger building that contains one or more other dwelling places.

It may be a rental, it may be a co-op (which means that the inhabitant owns shares of the entity that owns the entire building, along with the other residents, who are also shareholders), it may be a condo (which means that the inhabitant actually owns the dwelling itself), but they’re all apartments. Doesn’t matter if it’s high-end or low-end of the market, whether it’s on Park Avenue or East New York.

That’s all. There is no other meaning of the word, at least in NYC. An “apartment” is one unit in a multi-dwelling building. Doesn’t matter what the ownership situation is.
