I buy the Mane’n’Tail shampoo and conditioner at a farm supply store, where it is considerably cheaper than any other place. So if you are close to a Tractor Supply Company or other feed store, you might check to see if they carry Hoofmaker, should you want to try it.
The Mane’n’Tail conditioner is all right as a moisturizer. Not the best moisturizer, but I can apply it in the shower right after I turn off the water and rub it in without making a mess.
As an update I tried both neutrogena norwegian formula and corn huskers lotion. I didn’t get a chance to try bag balm or the other ideas. They were good, but not great.
The best I found though was decon proguard professional hand cream, an industrial hand cream designed for people who wear latex and nitrile gloves all day. It runs $2-3 an ounce, but it is worth it. Extremely repairing and non-greasy.
While you probably still need an external solution to compensate for occupational hazards, I want to reiterate the importance and effectiveness of moisturizing from the inside out. Drinking enough water (and watching intake of dehydrating things like alcohol) really does great things for the appearance and feel of skin and definitely helps a lot with drying and chapping.
I use Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion, which is nongreasy and unscented. It is probably in the middle in terms of price range, but I use it every day during the winter and a bottle will last several months for me.
I buy a ten dollar jar of coconut oil from the grocery store about once a year. It works wonderfully as long as I put it on straight out of a shower. I get the kind with no scent and sometimes mix it with Palmer’s cocoa butter (not the cream). I have tried other lotions and creams but this works best for me.
I also made a brown sugar scrub with coconut oil. My feet are as soft as a baby’s bottom.
Nope- this is a myth. Drinking water does help with things like energy levels, regularity, etc., it doesn’t affect the look or feel of your skin. Getting enough fatty acids does, and putting almost any kind of lotion on while your skin is wet is what really helps.
