> I hate movies where a character tells a pointless lie which then leads to more and bigger lies, then when the truth comes out, everything ends happily.

And the original lie is most often entirely pointless. This is a major subset of the Five Minute Idiot Plot – where the story would be over in five minutes if only someone opened his/her mouth and explicitly said what is it that is factually going on. Instead we get _“are we talking about the same thing?”–“why yes of course we are, silly”_ but neither of them mentions what the thing is. This is tolerable as a scene/sketch, not for an hour and a half.

Musicals. Just not into them. At ALL. Even when they’re parodied on things like “The Simpsons” I can barely tolerate them.

Add to my list casual drug use.

Regardless of your personal feelings on the lower key drugs, basically weed smoking with a few other thrown in there, at the end of the day it’s illegal and still harmful\*.

Showing that you can do illegal and harmful things with no consequence makes me not like something. This extends from the obvious stoner comedies to small instances like hinting that Bart Simpson is going to be a drug dealer when he grows up.

- As Louis CK says "Drugs are so good they will ruin your life, that’s how good they are

I hate stories about characters who are faced with a choice between a life of interesting, romantic adventures vs. a life of settling for the mundane and ordinary . . . and choosing the latter. \*Bridges of Madison County, \*for example.

Life is to be lived, not endured. I need a story that will pull me up and out, not push me down.

This is called the Third Act Misunderstanding. It’s when you are watching a perfectly good friendship or whatever and in the Third Act, something happens that makes the friends break up. I hate it. Real friends would listen to each other.

I also hate casual drug use and get downright offended when movies imply that all good ideas only come from drug use, or that the best ideas in the world have come from drug use. Just because somebody can’t conceive of a novel idea without getting high doesn’t mean everyone’s like that.

Along the same lines: The creative person has to have some sort of mental illness.

So you dislike vampires for _personal reasons_? Did you get bitten by one? 😕

Okay, sorry. I know that this is the way that CF threads typically play out; the OP’s parameters are quickly forgotten and people are just listing stuff they don’t like. But I got a chuckle at the notion of having a _personal_ beef with vampires.

I hate the trope of women most desiring assholes so they can bring out their sensitive side.

Cites:
Purple Rain
Jerry McGuire
As Good as it Gets

The one movie that got it right and I loved where the woman rightly finally kicked the man to the curb was “White Men Can’t Jump”.

I shut it off after about 15 minutes because it was BOOOOOORING. YMMV, of course; some people loved it.

For me, it’s any kind of medical drama, especially if there’s a pharmacist in it. So many inaccuracies!

I suppose I should explain why I have personal reasons for hating this. I had a cousin who was severely intellectually disabled, and also had terrible emotional problems. I know from first-hand experience that nature doesn’t compensate such people with special wisdom or virtuous character. Mental illness or disability is a big pain in the ass for those who have it, and for those who love them.

> My father died when I was a kid, and I hate, hate, hate “heartwarming” family/children’s movies where a parent dies but either returns through supernatural means or turns out not to have been dead after all. There were several of these in the '90s, including movies that were terrible for other reasons as well, e.g. _Ghost Dad_, and movies that were otherwise pretty good, e.g. the 1995 _A Little Princess_.

The all-time Grand Champion movie of this ilk is ‘Jack Frost’. Father is tragically killed, and comes back ‘reincarnated’ as a snowman. A snowman! His son becomes aware of this, and the snowman, now supernaturally hosting the dead father, helps the kid in a snowball fight, teaches him hockey, and rides with him on a sled! I remember Roger Ebert’s incredulous review, it certainly sounds like a piece of work. I imagine the melting snowman at the end is a real 3-hanky tearfest…

I agree. Especially gross-out humor. It tends to be repetitive. Hint: the third fart is not funny. It is just a fart. I remember in Mystery Men they had that one character whose super power was farting. What a bore he was. And they wondered why the movie tanked.

I used to fall into the trap of thinking that sad, bleak, tragic or upsetting movies were somehow automatically “deeper” or more philosophical than happy ones. But I am starting to agree with your view here; the world has plenty of depression already.
