# What is a Republican?

I couldn’t help but recall the old _Punch_ cartoon from the late Victorian era, which depicted a small golden-locked Kewpie-doll of a girl strolling and conversing with her very proper, Borsalino’d, ferociously-moustached grandfather.

\*\*_Little Euphonia:_ Grandpapa, what is the difference between a Liberal and a Tory?

_Grandfather:_ Well, a Tory is a man who loves England, and likes having a Queen, and jolly well wants to keep things going as they are. A Liberal is a man who hates the Queen, and wants to sow Dissent and Rebellion, and give away the Colonies, and see England go to Hell, and in short they’re NOTHING BUT A PACK OF NINCOMPOOPS AND SCOUNDRELS!
