Politics: Originally a conservative (see above) and have even worked on a few republican campaigns…now Liberal/Progressive
Gun Control: I’ve more or less not given a shit either way…now, well I still don’t give a shit but I consider most 2nd amendment defenders closet racists in the absence of other information to the contrary.
If that’s “generic liberal position” on guns, then I’ve gone from that to being the NRA’s worst nightmare – a true gun grabber.
I’d like to see the Second Amendment repealed. I’d like to see all handguns banned entirely (except for those of the police, and even then, once we’ve gathered up and confiscated all the handguns, we could move towards a British-style police, armed only when necessary). I’d like to see gun ownership restricted to hunting weapons, like deer rifles and shotguns, and I’d like “hunting weapons” to be fairly narrowly defined by the law.
I’m honestly not sure if I’d like to see the second amendment repealed, BUT… as long as it’s there, I think that if I want people to be as scrupulously respectful of the FIRST amendment as I’d like them to be, it would be hypocritical of me not to be similarly respectful of the second amendment. (That said, I sure as heck wish it was written in a more clear fashion…)
when I was younger, I supported capital punishment, but I’ve come to see it as racist, applied haphazardly, and has almost certainly resulted in the state sponsored murder of innocent people.
I used to hate socialism but after reading Upton Sinclair and learning more about the abuses by the top companies to the people, I can see what they are talking about.
I used to always support the US military but now I can see most of the guys its just a job they had. I also have questioned if we took the right side in WW1.
The (John) Kennedy assassination. I was born in 1965 and once I was old enough to understand such things it always seemed obvious to me that it was a conspiracy and Oswald was the fall guy. Loved the Oliver Stone film (and still do, as entertainment).
However recent documentaries showing how the so-called magic bullet theory is nonsense and especially showing how the blunt-nosed Mannlicher-Carcano bullets yaw & tumble in flight AND can penetrate flesh without major deformations, and how the X-rays of JFK’s skull show clearly the radial impact cracks (which only form at an entry wound) are on the back of his head, all this has lead me to decide that Oswald acted alone.
The first World War was a mess of rivalries and should never have been fought. People were hankering for war and thought it would be over quickly, just like with the American Civil War. We should have stayed out of it, but the Germans managed to pull us in against them with the Lusitania sinking and the Zimmerman telegram. There really was no “right side” in that war, unless you had a natural affinity for the Brits or the Germans or whoever. And after one side introduced chemical warfare, they all took part, so one party or the other shouldn’t really be demonized for it. As for the end of the war, if the Allies hadn’t exacted harsh reparations against the Germans, the Germans and their allies probably would have against the losing party if they had won. The war introduced a lot of innovation for further warfare and at least a couple of empires broke up and borders changed, but the war itself was useless and had no reason for being fought as a world war except because of alliances
I used to believe in giving cops the benefit of the doubt, but now I starting to see the wisdom in treating their claims with as much skepticism as anyone else’s.
Not just because of current events (including this one), but also because of my own experiences with asshole cops who try to bait people into confrontations rather than maintain the peace.
I used to believe that the US was always right in whatever war/sanctions/policeaction/invasion/incursion/etc… that it got into (Dunno about WW2, tho). Then, I cametobelieve/realized that all of these are just US interest groups using the military to pressure foreign interest groups to yield to US interest groups, and that it is always about money.
Sure WW1 had a reason: Germany wanted to rule Europe. Britain and France had no interest or reason to fight it. If Germany stayed out of Austrian affairs it would have fizzled out as a minor conflict. Germany was the “bad guy” and wanted all-out war.
It was a war for conquest and respect. As equally useful or useless as all other wars.
Tattooes. As a young person, I was fairly judgmental of inked people. Now, most people I know have tats, though I still prefer they be discrete and not ostentatious.
