a window came up when i clicked on one of those little update bubbles eMachines computers have sometimes. it said:

> [@](#):
>
> Windows XP Update Rollup 1 - Windows XP Gold
>
> Microsoft has released the Windows XP Update Rollup 1 as an easy way to deploy many critical updates at once. This package contains many security updates and bug fixes released for Windows XP.
>
> Click here to download and install this update. (8.96MB)
> Click here for more information from Microsoft.

so, i clicked on it to download, and it is now telling me:

> [@](#):
>
> Welcome to the
> Windows XP
> KB826939 Setup Wizard
> Before you install this update, we recommend that you:
>
> - Back up your system
>
> - Close all open programs
> To complete this installation, Windows might require restarting
> after you finish this wizard.
>
> To continue, click Next.

so, what is this and how do i back up my system?

[This](http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=826939) page describes what the Rollup is. What they want you to do is make a backup/ copy of all your data that might be lost if the Update causes some kind of hard drive failure. You can always re-install any software you own but its the data that you want to save.I have never installed this particular update so I have no direct experience with it. Doesn’t give the most secure feeling does it ? XP also has System Restore so you may want to make a Restore Point before installing this update. Read about Sytem Restore [here](http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/pro/using/howto/gethelp/systemrestore.asp).

This is the same boilerplate warning that comes with all Windows Updates. Microsoft wouldn’t release an update if they thought it had any chance of causing data loss.

I don’t get that warning when using Windows update on XP, and I didn’t get it when using 98SE or 95 either.
