a cat will swallow a mouse whole in about 15 seconds. they do crush the skull first wit a couple chomps.
they do focus on destroying the head or decapitating animals because then the meat holds still.
That explains why the one cat was trying to chew a hole in my skull at 3:00a.m. the one time.
Thanks, Colibri!
I truly didn’t know, as liver is not on my list of favorite things to eat.
My old tom eats 4-5 cotton rats every week, he brings them in from the fields and dines on the porch right outside the back door. He eats every single delicious bite of the cotton rat except for that one danged organ which I throw over the fence for the fireants, and all these sixteen years that damn cat has owned me I’ve never identified what it is a cat won’t eat.
Good Kitty. Saucer of milk to wash it down?
Nice user name/post combo!
Me-ow!

Perhaps the mouse was a meth addict and had consumed a lethal dose of the stuff made by that Heisenberg dude.
I grew up with rodent-eating cats, and was mildly fascinated by what they wouldn’t eat. Apparently mice and voles were tasty, but rats were regarded as inedible. Rabbits were evidently delicious with the exception of their ears, nose, and hind legs (plus of course the shiny pouchy thing). I had one cat that ate every bit of its prey, but always barfed it up again soon afterward. Biology classes in high school and college leave me thinking the part rejected by cats who know what they’re doing is the cecum. It’s not typically spherical or turquoise and usually looks more like a bean than a pea, but hey, language is imprecise and innards can vary in appearance. Here’s a link to a relevant discussion, with pictures:
Loosely speaking, mummy brownis the same color.
And you said you don’t like to eat liver…
Poor creature gave up its life for nothing. ![]()
My cats are indoors-only and don’t hunt, but I’ve heard that the mouse liver has too much vitamin A for the cat to process, and they instinctively don’t eat it for this reason.
That’s actually quite similar, apart from the colour.

Except they do eat the liver.
That is, quite possibly, the coolest Web site I have ever seen. Kudos to Kliban.
Stoopid cat.
Yeah, tasty gooshyfood (i.e. braiiiins) might result… once… then no more gooshyfood and no more scritchies.
;).
