What is going on with the SSM bill in the New York Senate?

It just passed!

Found it: http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/A8520-2011

Looks like the Assembly rushed it through today to get to the Senate in time.

Another nail in the coffin of bigotry, hatred, discrimination, and small-minded ignorance. Thank goodness.

Amen to that. Wow. I’m proud to live in New York.

ETA: How much longer before the other dominoes tumble? What’s the next state? How about federal recognition?

This Bay Stater welcomes you to the club!

Happy to be in your company! Sorry we’re running so late…

As a person originally from New York, I feel so full of… what’s the opposite of shame?

Pride?

No, it’s still New York. Let’s go with less shame.

(With thanks to the Simpsons)

I think we’ll have to wait until after the next elections to see anything. 2010 was a good year for Republicans, but marriage equality supporters made some notable gains in a few states. Rhode Island and Maryland looked good to go, but things fell through in both. A good year for the Democrats, and the usual retirements of older legislators in favor of younger ones could easily shift those two, at least, in our direction. In both, the governors are supporters, and in office until 2014. Maine’s legislature already voted for marriage equality, but it was overruled by a referendum. Now they’ve got some Tea Party governor, so it’s probably dead there until he’s out of office. Other than that, I think we have to wait and see where we are after the 2012 elections.

Proud to be a New Yorker.

The community where I live has an extremely large lesbian community. I expect that the lines at the clerk’s office on July 24 will be out the door, down the block and across the street.

Bravo, New York!!

(And may I note this was passed by the legislature of New York, giving it the unmistakable imprimatur of the people of New York. THIS is how democracy works. It’s not lightning fast, I admit, but it gets there.)

As does this current Nutmegger!

The Niagara Falls honeymoon industry must have done some lobbying for a stimulus package.

Welcome to the 21st Century, New York!

Somewhat surprisingly, Grisanti of Niagara was one the "I’m not sure"s. How could he NOT vote for it? His district will benefit hugely. And he did in the end.

I’m curious about the exact time the revised bill passed both Albany houses, EDT. (It was inevitable that Cuomo would sign it.)

I live in Upstate New York. That’s a big surprise to long-term folks here! And I have a transgendered friend (who, BTW, is helping me find a good housing alternative). So I intend to send her a separate e-mail to congratulte her.

ETA: Check out the additional two words added at the beginning of my location field, ElvisL1ves.

Thanks to all the dopers, especially the straight ones, who fought for marriage equality.

I LOVE NY

And I so hope as goes NY, so goes the nation.

You should also express some sympathy that GENDA passed the Assembly but never made it out of the Senate.

Na, now SSM is one of these East Coast Elitist Liberal type of things, Texas (and The Real America ™) has to reject it for that reason alone.

Do you really not understand how offensive it is to tell people we’re supposed to wait until a majority of bigots and homophobes deign to vote for a referendum or what-have-you? We shouldn’t be needing to go through this legislative bullshit because the courts should have correctly interpreted the equality aspects of already made laws to recognize gay marriage.

Perhaps another time or if she brings it up.

There’s always Congress + POTUS. Or SCOTUS. *
