Bath tissue? What happened the last time you put TP in the bath/shower? Nope. Ok. Toilet tissue? We all know it’s NOT for the toilet. Now, don’t we? Face tissue? Why not nose tissue? Or pick-up-cat-puke tissue? Or squash-that-spider paper? Paper towel? Kinda ok. But is it really towel size? Not big enough or priced low enough for after bath. How about paper hand-towel? Or Wipe-counter towel? Aluminum foil. Who’s plot they trying to figure out? Where’s the sword fight? Is it waxed paper or wax paper? Makes a difference if you’re drinking or watching moon phases and tides. Parchment paper. Not easy to write scrolls on. I’ve tried. Nothing sticks. It’s not really vellum. Or made of some super thin leather. Ok. I’m getting in the weeds… ---

This turned into a thread about my substance use. Somehow. Ok. I get it. This is a stare at your big toe for hours thought process. What can I say? My crossword puzzles were done. Nothing to watch on TV but bad news and bad movies. Didn’t have a book with me. Too early for human interaction. My big toe was interesting. Pink sparkly nail polish is shiny and pretty. 😄 ---

An Indonesian friend of mine told me he thinks that the English word “handkerchief” is hilarious … because the word literally says that it is a kerchief for your hand, and that’s just kind of an odd concept. I pointed out that the Indonesian word has the same kind of problem. He said, without thinking, “no it doesn’t, it’s just a single word that means handkerchief … _saputangan_.” These things are so much easier to see when you are NOT a native speaker. Sapu = broom and tangan = hand. So a “saputangan” is a “hand _broom_,” which is weirder, I think, than a “hand _kerchief_.” My friend was quite amused and conceded the point. He’d never thought of a saputangan as a hand broom, anymore than I had thought of a handkerchief as a kerchief for my hand. ---

I’d think of it more in line with “cannon fodder.” In other words, a resource you don’t give much thought to, because it’s considered to be expendable. ---

This a cultural landmine in Canada. Up there, you use a serviette to wipe you mouth and hands, while a napkin is used by women for a uniquely female event. ---
