What is it like to be stupid?

I have a friend who is as dumb as a can of rocks and is an even bigger con man. The problem with him is this, he thinks that he is smarter than everyone he tries to fool and thinks you don’t realize what he’s doing. That makes him even more stupid. So my point is, truly stupid people don’t know they’re stupid. Similar to crazy people, they don’t realize they’re crazy.

My brain hurts.

Like Forrest Gump I assume. “That’s my boat…”

It’s my opinion that stupid people like to be told what their opinions are, because it’s too much work to form their own, or they simply can’t. They are usually the ones that are prone to things like (but not limited to), religious fanaticism, racism, faked moon landings (and other CTs), general ignorance, pseudoscience, pyramid schemes, spam, chain emails, and Rachel Ray.

Thinking and logic is something they abhor, in fact, something they might not even be aware of, so I don’t think it has much to do with their IQ. Hard Science baffles them, so they think it’s all dubious bullshit. They’ll pick and choose what to believe in because it strikes their fancy for whatever reason. Unfortunately, it is these people that have the loudest mouths.

We had a perfect example of this in the recent Lady in Red/Rayh debacle.

Here is part of a post from purple haze:

Part of the response from Lady in Red:

I couldn’t imagine how she didn’t see the difference–so thanks for providing some insight.

This is kind of the exception that proves the rule, but…

One day, and old coworker of mine said “I’m not very smart.”

I said “What are you talking about? You’re really smart!”

She said, “Oh, no I’m not. I have a low IQ. You just think I’m smart because I have a big vocabulary.”

After I got done laughing my ass off, I told her that IQ wasn’t everything. And then I started thinking about it. I realized that I actually had never seen any evidence that she was particularly intelligent in a traditional sense (academic-type stuff). I thought of her as smart because she was good at her job, good at creative problem solving, quick-witted, analytical, and able to communicate clearly and effectively. So she was definitely smart in spite of her IQ test.

So maybe only smart people think that they’re stupid.

In a college psychology course I took many years ago all the students filled out a questionnaire where we rated ourselves on our skills in different areas, then averaged out the ratings. Turns out, the vast majority of the class had a final rating of above average. How remarkable that all those above-average people coincidentally signed up for that course!

Have you ever noticed that both left wingers and right wingers assume that they (1) represent the majority, (2) are a righteous, embattled minority defying an oppressive establishment, and (3) never notice that they couldn’t possibly be both at the same time?

Redundant post removed.

Well, the study suggested that smart people underestimated their relative intelligence, not due to self-deprecation but due to an overestimation of the capabilities of their peers. So it’s not so much that smart people think themselves stupid, they just find it hard to imagine others not being as smart as they are.

Aren’t smart people lovely?

I like money.

I’m pretty sure I’m pretty stupid. And just think about all that money my folks wasted to send me to college.

And I get a little stupider every day.

Oh I don’t know. Stupidity is a relative thing. I’ve been with people who had so much knowledge and wisdom that I felt like a potted plant. OTOH I’ve encountered a lot of people who were essentially walking geraniums.

I like 'em.

It’s kind of tangiential to the OP, but one of the boons and curses of Stupid People living by unsubstantiated assumptions is that you can tell quite a lot about the content of their character by the things that come out of their mouths when they’re in conflict with others.

Condensed version of a conversation with a former supervisor;

Former Boss: (some utter bullshit about HR)
Me: I know enough about how business works to know this isn’t true.
FB: Oh, so you’ve had a lot of trouble with HR in the past?
Me: I didn’t say any such thing.
FB: Well you said such-and-such, so I assumed…
Me: You always seem to assume the absolute worst possible answer so that you can turn the conversation into an attack on the other person. This says quite a lot about your character, none of it good.
FB: You’re being insolent!
Me: No, I’m defending myself from repeated false accusations. You know, things would go a lot smoother around here if you’d stop always assuming the worst.
The boon is that when you see people doing this sort of thing to others, you can get a glimpse of their true character and be forewarned. The curse is when, like this jackass, they hold power over you.

YES! Mathematical cranks think that we are just making up the notion of rigorous proof. Also, they think that since they don’t understand [given area of math], then neither do the people who study it for living.

It’s nice being stupid and hanging around here. There’s a never ending parade of smart people happy to point out just how stupid you are.

I suggest you sit yourself down in front of a mirror and ask that question- slowly, making sure you say the words clearly so you can understand the question.

I can’t believe you like money too. We should hang out.

Is being dumb like being high all the time?
