For at least some of them, their initial reason for construction was so that someone could sit with their legs astride the base, for a photo. I think they’re only occasionally amusing, but generally harmless. Just heard a story of students at an engineering college building what the faculty took to be a rocket of snow, complete with great clouds of smoke billowing around the base. ---

If you’ll excuse a distaff hijack, there’s the hubbub last winter over a nude “Venus” snowwoman in Rahway, New Jersey: [video clip from the “Today” show story, but the initial still shows the story before-and-after](http://today.msnbc.msn.com/id/35709463/ns/today-today_people/?GT1=43001). IMHO, the only objectionable element there is the presence of TV hosts Kathy Lee Gifford and Hoda Kotb. ---

I remember one time in college when my best friend (a guy) and I (a girl) were waiting outside a friend’s dorm. There was snow on the ground and we decided to draw a giant penis in the snow. At the time, it was the funniest thing evar. I wish we’d thought to build a snow penis instead. That would have been hilarious! We’re growed up now. I don’t think either of us would do something like that today. But we would definitely have a good laugh if we saw one. ---
