People also follow fashion trends; they see one person do it, they follow, others follow them, etc. It grows exponentially from there. Back in 2001 I observed almost all the women at the campus where I work [put their purse strap between their breasts](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=84025). The trend died a few years later. ---

My cheapie flip-phone goes in my back left pocket. If I happen to have a front pocket that’s deep enough to accommodate it, chances are the phone will lodge uncomfortably in the crease of my lap when I sit. No thanks. So, no, I’m not trying to call attention to my butt. I’m just trying to carry the stupid thing in the least painful way possible without being tied to my purse. ---

I find the back pocket phone thing strange only because I can’t see it without thinking it’s just begging to get pickpocketed. Some of them are hanging 3/4s out of the pocket and, while one might think “Oh, I’d feel that” the whole premise of pickpocketing is that you _don’t_ feel it. ---

AYFKMRN? OP, do us a favor. Go to Target or Walmart or some place where they sell women’s clothes. Look at the pants. Look at all the pants. See if you could fit your damn phone in the pockets. Now wander on back to the men’s clothing section. Do you see a difference? Are you seriously unaware that women’s clothing sucks when it comes to pockets? I see upthread someone mentioned he keeps his phone in an inside jacket pocket. How _nice_ for him. His jackets _have_ pockets. A lot of women I know keep their phone in their bra. My bra is not large enough to hold a phone without me looking really weird. I am tiny, so my back jeans pockets really aren’t, generally speaking, large enough to hold the phone either. When I’m walking the dog or tracking my steps/miles, my phone is clipped to my waistband in the back, right over my back pocket. It is not, I repeat, it is NOT meant to draw attention to my ass. My ass draws attention to my ass; there’s no need to stick a phone in there to ruin the visual line. If I don’t really need my phone or I’m not tracking steps, I throw it in the black hole of my purse. It’s way easier to lose a phone or have it stolen from a purse by a good pickpocket. What the OP is telling us is that women should just walk around with a damn phone in our hands 24/7. That’s not inconvenient or anything. :rolleyes: What is it with dudes who think everything women do is carefully designed to attract attention from men? Even lesbians, married women, and otherwise attached or not looking for a mate women? It’s just so arrogant and self-centered to believe that all women ONLY want attention from men. Ridiculous. ---
