I just had a look at the NADS site after seeing Curly Chick’s sig.
I recognise loads of user names ! Is NADS a sort of UK Dopers forum?
Are the two sites linked?

NADS is a site run by **Jjimm** - many of the members there are also members here, but there is no formal affiliation to the SDMB.

NADS came about from a MPSIMS thread were someone said wouldn’t it be nice to be able to talk about Marmite and football without having to explain it. A couple of people said yes and they started looking at options. We decided(unfortunately as it’s a dog IMO) on ezboard.

It is not affiliated with the SDMB at all. It’s just a place were people who got to know each other hear can shoot the shit about local things.

**Everyone** is welcome. You don’t have to be European. We have US, Canadian and Ausies posters.

[Welcome to NADS - a place for people from Britain, Ireland and other parts of Europe to talk shit to each other without having to explain everything. Despite this, all nationalities are most welcome! Just don’t expect us to explain what Marmite is.](http://b21.ezboard.com/bnads)

**Mangetout** is spot on.

A good chunk of the people on NADs are either dopers or ex-dopers (although there are also a few people on there who have never been SDMBers).

Basically it was set up not to “replace” the SDMB for us but to sit alongside it as a place where we can go to chat about things like marmite, penelope keith and pubs without:

1. it getting lost beneath all the Republican vs Democrat threads

2. having to explain what marmite is

3. Being accused of alcoholism for drinking more than two pints in a night 😉

I think it’s also worth pointing out that NADS was set up before the SDMB went to subscription. So it isn’t as if we all buggered off to avoid paying a fiver.
Nope, that isn’t it at all; many of us are still here, as you can see.

I’d just like to reiterate that I don’t really “run” it. I happen to be the person who set it up first, and I do a lot of the admin and image hosting, but the administration and moderation is a shared effort. I don’t claim ownership.

As said, all are welcome - in addition to the Brits, Irish, and charming continental types we’ve also got Americans, Canucks, Aussies, and possibly others I’ve forgotten about (sorry).

A fiver is five quid (although I haven’t used quid since 1966) and buggered off could also be substituted for nicked off (well in Oz anyway). If you were to ask me for a fiver you’re likely to get a Queens Pink.

“Buggered off” means “went away” in the UK.

I beg your pardon **Crandolph**!
The meaning of my earlier post was that we, the NADSers did not set up NADS in a fit of pique merely to avoid having to pay money to remain on the SDMB. Odearie me no.

A fiver is five units of the currency of the land.

Here in Ireland, the terminology probably came from the British vernacular of a fiver equalling five pounds. When we had Irish pounds, a fiver was five of them and now that we have the euro, a fiver is five euro. I seem to recall that the introductory low price for joining the SDMB was something in the region of 5 euro - hence a fiver.

A fiver, along with its big brother - the tenner, is usually a banknote for that value. If I had 2 x 2 euro coins and a 1 euro coin, I most probably wouldn’t say I had a fiver, but if I had the little blue 5 euro banknote, I would.

Maybe local vernacular.
The color of the note along with who used to be on it.
I suppose it also has that ‘naughty’ connotation.

> [@](#):

Nicked off means buggered off here in the same way.
He may also have pissed off which has an entirely different meaning to _being_ pissed off.

eg.
Where did jjimm go?

1. Oh he pissed off with his mates.
2. Oh he buggered off with his mates.
3. Oh me nicked off with his mates.

That explains my confusion, since “nicked off” in the UK means “stolen off”.

</div>

Means that here, too: “I nicked it off jjimm.”

“jjimm got nicked” would mean something else altogether.

As would “get nicked, jjimm”.

Hey, I’m an open-minded, tolerant liberal, lover of freedom and the American Dream.I was always willing to let you Brits go your own way, without expecting you to “explain what marmite is”
Until I tasted the stuff once.
Now I’ll never respect you again.
So get your NADS off the internet, and please stop inhabiting the same planet as me.

My first whoosh! 😛 …although unintentional. My post was actually a joke suggesting that we couldn’t even understand your explanation for why you want NADS, which would implicity be further justification. Hence, I hoped, humor.

I think pretty much every American could figure out fiver or tenner without an explanation; I don’t ever remember needing that explained. Although I’m sure some non-US Doper will post shortly about the tour group from Pennsyltucky who couldn’t understand numbers with -er appended! :smack:

_Buggered off_ I knew also, although some Americans probably wouldn’t. In context it’s not that hard. It’s stuff like the joking House of Lords references and your currency units before the early '70s that confuse the hell out us… 😃
