Actually, my coworker’s name is Mâra. She’s of Latvian descent, and she told me it’s Latvian for “rose”. The little line over the a doesn’t seem to have any effect on the prononciation of her name. If you give your daughter this name, be prepared for a lifetime of people calling her Myra, though. ---

In my youth , My mom and i would talk on forever about what i would really name my kids. Half the time her answer to my names would be " Fuck No!" meaning , I will disown you if you let your kid have that name. I have compiled a list of names that Are names that i should name my kids but cant. Although maybe i could, Middle names are free to my whim… Beatrice Ramona Roberta Adelaide Minerva clemintine Lady Gwenivere (sp?) Alexandria Morgain I have a passion for those camelot sounding names ---

Pretty name choices, anyways.** Actually the name Aparecida comes from ‘Nossa Senhora Aparecida’ and this is the patron saint of Brazil. ‘Nossa Senhora Aparecida’ basically translates to ‘our lady who appeared’. According to the legend, three fishermen found a headless statue, followed by the head in the river Paraíba (in the state São Paulo) in 1717. When they cleaned the statue they saw that it was the Virgin Mary in black. There is more on the story (in portuguese), along with a picture of the original statue [here](http://www.ositedossantos.hpg.ig.com.br/nsa_aparecida.html). In fact it was a statue of ‘Nossa Senhora da Conceição’ (which translates to ‘our lady of the immaculate conception’, and this version of Mary is the patron saint of Portugal). The name Conceição (pronounced cone-SAY-sow with a nasal ending) is also a very popular girls name in Brazil, as are some of the other names given to describe the various _versions_ of Mary, such as ‘Soccoro’ (this means ‘help’) and ‘Fátima’ (pronounced fah-CHEE-mah) which comes from ‘Nossa senhora de Fátima’, a statue of the Virgin Mary from the city of Fátima in Portugal. ---

If (and it’s a pretty big if) I ever have kids, I want two little girls. One of them will be called Anna Vivienne, and the other will be Genevieve, and her father can choose her middle name 🙂 ---

I always thought I would name my daughter Hannah Grace. But now all of a sudden Hannah is incredibly popular, so I just didn’t do it (my daughter is almost 2 now). We did go with Grace as a middle name though, since it was my grandmother’s name. If we had a boy I wanted to name him Andres. For some reason people just freaked out when I told them our “boy’s” name. Just about everyone I told hated it. ---

Ah yes **brujo**. How I’d enjoy digging out **The Odyssey** and begin naming away. I’d need at least a dozen kids just to begin having fun. But I think little Aggy would be quite pissed off at dead ol’ dad. From the time I was ~4 till about 15 I was certain I would have sons named Horus and Anubis. It just seemed right. Now they both fail my rule that “Given names must have at least three syllables.” ---

I just remembered, once I was playing the game with a gf discussing names we liked and I tossed out “Soul” and was immediately rejected. I still kinda like it but would never do it. I would also like to have a bunch of girls named Gwendolyn, Gwenivere, Gwenifer, Gwyneth and a few others that I could think up. Well, at the very least when I’m old and grey I can adopt a hoarde of cats and have names all ready for them. People with unusual names seem to either revel in them and their uniqueness or revile them and their oddity. I’ve always been the former. My sister (Shenandoah) was the later until highschool then she became the former. It’s a shame so many people feel the later. ---

Though it’s already been mentioned…Ophelia. I actually suggested this when Ms. Apotheosis and I were seeking names for the li’l 'un. It had never occurred to me what sorta living hell other kids would make her life with a name like “oh-FEEL-ya.” Color me dumbass. :rolleyes: ---
