I was reading an article about the Walther PPK when I came across this sentence: > Like a Rolex Submariner, a Porsche 911, or the first chord in _A Hard Day’s Night_, it hits such a perfect sweet spot that there isn’t much point to altering it. I don’t know much about the Rolex, but the other two examples I found good. So I came to wonder what other examples of “just perfect sweet spot” you might come up with. ---

This is so subjective. I could say as perfect as the opening number in “La La Land” but then scores of people will be quick to show up and express their disgust. ---

Yes, IMHO might be more appropriate. 🙂 I could also say as perfect as a Japanese mechanical pencil and even though most people may agree it would still be a subjective opinion (albeit a collective one). It looks like I no longer know what objective can mean. 🤔 ---

The Slovak Philharmonic Orchestra’s _Holberg Suite_ that was produced and recorded in the early 1980s. Any time Maria Callas sung _Carmen_. Especially the “Habanera.” The Christmas I spent in Israel. I was visiting different schools in Western Galilee as part of a conference for Jewish educators, and we’d just finished up at the Naval Academy, and were going on to visit an “alternate placement” high school for kids who had had special difficulties in public school. Someone said, “It’s Christmas, isn’t it?” Someone else said “Hang on, I’ll check my phone… Yeah. It’s Christmas.” Then we went on to talk about something else. Best Christmas ever. The sound of my car starting on the first try, after I had changed the cylinder head gasket by myself. ---

I once worked with an old geologist/explorer who spent lots of time in the bush. He claimed the mid-sixties Land Rover (like [this](https://www.pinterest.com/pin/539657967834161634/) one) was the apotheosis of off-road vehicle development, as far as usability and reliability. And that everything before or since has been below that peak of development. Sorry, don’t know the exact year. I leave it to the car experts hereabouts to weigh in on his choice, as I’ve never even driven one. ---

Well there was this girl in college . . . she was pretty much the definition of sweet spot and the standard for all things to follow. A good 18 year old Scotch comes near to achieving such perfection but still falls short. ---

My husband. I’m sure objectively he has flaws, but they are irrelevant to me. He is so reliably compassionate, responsible, fair and calm, which are the four things I need most from a partner. I remember them being rather loud and uncomfortable, but there was a brilliant simplicity and functionality to them, as well. If the windshield wiper motor (which was located at the base of the windshield) broke, there was a knob on it so you could move the wiper back and forth by hand. A lot of things are perfect, or so close as to be the same thing. The sunrise. The sunset. A full moon. The smell in the air before a thunderstorm. My dog - and the expression on his face when you throw a big stick. Fatty tuna sushi in Japan. A juicy peach. Homemade hamburgers. A cold Modelo Negro on a hot day. The first game of football. The miracle of the human body. The satisfied feeling after a highly productive weightlifting session. Making the tough diagnosis by remembering some useless fact someone mentioned _once_ in medical school decades ago. A cool breeze on a summer night. So many favourite tunes. Will Durant’s History of Civilization. Perfection is everywhere. ---

The absolute explosion of light as you walk into it was, I’m sure, intended to appear as (literally) miraculous. j ---
