Perhaps the change occurs only when the person attempts to log in, either manually or by cookie rather than posting. ---

I dunno… I’m pretty sure I’ve also seen drive-bys, of the type one would not expect to attempt to log in again, with “banned” under their names. Of course, there’s no way to know that for sure, but… ---
