Wyoming, Alaska, North and South Dakotas - surely those are imaginary lands, aren’t they? :D:D:D j/k Too much of modern life flummoxes me, I live a very quiet introverted life, though I certainly keep well informed via the internet about everything, hours a day. I sometimes don’t ‘get’ modern celebrities, fashions, movies, or music, but that could just be a cranky old folks thing. Small examples, I swear I thought these were a conspiracy: hummingbirds. I never saw a real hummingbird until a few years ago, and now I Believe… Now, its bluebirds. I’ve never seen a real bluebird, ever - someone is making them up! 😛 ---

Painting your face, or what some women like to call makeup. I’ve never worn it (I’m a woman), never had any desire to wear it, and don’t really get why it’s so important to so many women. Sure, on stage or for models I can see why you would want to paint yourself attractively, but for the women in my office, I really can’t see the difference between the ones who spend massive amounts on the stuff, and those who just go natural (and I’m talking really natural, not “she’s wearing makeup so good that you can’t tell she’s wearing it.”) There’s a thread around here somewhere about mascara. In my entire life, I don’t think I’ve ever noticed or cared about the length of someone’s eyelashes. ---

Hot dogs. I have yet to find someone else claim they don’t love hot dogs. Abstract art. Critics claim they like it so everyone else follows along. Firefly. Anti cliche is still cliche. No characters you can root for. Battlestar Galactica. Just depressing. ---

Drinking non-mixed alcoholic drinks for the taste. For example, some people say that they like a good aged scotch. Alcohol tastes terrible, so I struggle to believe that people actually like the taste of straight alcoholic drinks. I understand the appeal of things like strawberry margaritas or long island iced teas - they taste good. I think people find the idea of drinking things like whiskey and scotch to fit their idea of adulthood or specifically manhood, and have eventually gotten to the point where they don’t mind the taste as much and associate it with the pleasant feeling of inebriation. They confuse this with enjoying the taste itself. There are a lot of fashions that are allegedly sexy that I have never, ever understood. I think lipstick is gross. I think high heels look ridiculous. Duckface and lip-biting are equally bizarre. The all-dolled-up look in a slinky dress looks like Halloween costumery to me. Maybe that’s the point? Maybe the idea is to dress and act as un-sexy as possible with the implication that if you’re still even a little sexy while acting completely unsexy, then you must truly be extremely sexy indeed under all the unsexy. Like carrying around a boat anchor to show how strong you are - sure, you can barely walk with it, but imagine how strong and virile you must be if you can carry it around at all! Some kind of “Harrison Bergeron” shit. Or maybe I’m just broken. ---

Buffy (the series)- I am always flabbergasted when people I like talk about how much they enjoy this show. It just has to be a joke. Everything about the show is just so bad, I can’t imagine someone seriously liking it. Dr. Who (the series)- Pretty much everything as stated above. I always assume the person is lying when they tell me they like the show. ---

That Seinfeld was popular. When it was current I knew exactly one person IRL who professed to be a fan of the show (and he would not shut up about it no matter how much everyone else rolled their eyes). Now, however many years later it’s been the count is still one. ---

Asylum Films. I don’t know how they are allowed to exist. I don’t mean legally, I mean karmically. I don’t understand how they don’t violate some fundamental law of the universe, so that the Living Tribunal appears and crushes them. But more fundamentally, I don’t understand how people exist with no self respect and no capacity for self examination. I read that Cracked article where they interviewed someone who tried to write for Asylum, and the writer basically said the people who run the company don’t comprehend that they are making bad movies. They think they are competent film makers who are genuinely trying to make good movies, They’re just really, really bad at it. It’s like watching the Dunning Kruger Effect at work. And yet somehow they continue to exist, which means someone, somewhere, actually looked at “Transmorphers” or “The Day the Earth Stopped,” and was like, “Yeah, I’d pay money to see that movie.” I just don’t understand. ---

I was watching a presentation by an attractive young woman wearing heels whose feet were evidently hurting her. She kept swaying- and I do mean _swaying_- back and forth as she shifted her weight from one foot to the other. I’m limiting myself to things that are not considered trash. Trash sells, and I get that. These are ones where I genuinely feel my leg is being pulled because people like them on a deeper level and consider them actual quality. The Big Lebowski - I think I missed the boat, timing wise. I only saw it a year ago and I found it quite dull. Zero laughs for me and I did not enjoy it at all. The Big Bang Theory - I was dumbfounded at how bad I found it. I think it is popular, though. I hear a lot about it. How I Met Your Mother - Same as above. No idea why it was popular. Kingdom of the Crystal Skull - Opposite this time. It was panned by a lot of people and I liked it just as much as the original 3 movies.
