Well, that’s fifty bucks for a set of twelve places, might break the bank!
I know exactly what you’re describing - I bought a set like that once because I fell in love with the design on it, but the ceramic was almost like cinder toffee or meringue in it’s lightweight, porous and fragile nature. I swear I could have taken a bite out of one of the plates and retained most of my teeth.
My best advice is: buy secondhand. My current tableware I picked up in charity shops - it sometimes take a bit of hunting around to get a full set, but it’s like furniture - it’s not that they used to build everything to last in the past, it’s that everything not built that way is already broken. Anything old-ish, and unbroken probably isn’t going to break now.
I do the same. I use 7 and 8 inch ramen and udon bowls for nearly everything, not just stir fries and noodle dishes. Today I had a lamb koftas. Cous cous and baked spiced veges in the bottom of the bowl, koftas on top with a pile of hummus and another of minted yogurt. Even baked dinners are better out of a bowl.
Plates are mostly only good if you have a big slab o’meat that needs cutting up, otherwise bowls are where it’s at!
