The cat of my household who’s had the longest name was Comfort Sideways Sidewinder Keuka Crooked Cat Attractive Nuisance. His first kitten name was Nuisance; which fairly soon got lengthened to Attractive Nuisance. The Sideways Sidewinder Keuka Crooked Cat part is all due to the same thing (Keuka Lake’s sometimes called the Crooked Lake): he had an ear infection as a kitten and for some years afterwards carried his head angled sideways because his sense of balance was screwed up by the ear infection and kept telling him that was level (to which he rapidly adapted; he stopped missing his jumps and falling within a few days of recovery.) The Comfort part, which is I think the only part that wound up on his official veterinary records, was because he was a comfort to me after my First Cat died, and also because (like any cat) he loved and was very good at being comfortable; and was what he was usually called, but I did occasionally call him the whole long shebang. Usually when he was living up to the last bit of it. I have been un-Comfort-ed for quite a few years now. Still feels kind of like he’s around somewhere, though. ---

Gruntle because when I picked her out at the feral kitten rescue home she made me the opposite of _disgruntled_. Also now known as Tonka Pudgebutt by me. My housemate calls her Potato because she is as big as a sack of potatoes and about as graceful. Her brother is known as Salvador or Sal because he melts in your arms like the clocks in the Salvador Dali paintings. Moxie is the Siamese. Within minutes of picking her up from the breeder ( I doubt she weighed 2 pounds but she commanded all she surveyed) I looked over to her and exclaimed “Haven’t you got a lot of Moxie!” **Boo** aka Crazy Cat Lady ---

We have **Gimli,** _son of Gloin_. We got him from the SPCA, and he’s not really a cuddly cat, but he does love to supervise us when working outside in the garden. The other one is **Pippin,** _fool of a Took_. Pippin is actually larger than Gimli, and also gets called _the very hungry Kittypillar_ because he is food-motivated. ---

I’ve never given my cats long names. The females all have/had the middle name Belle, though. My one male was Will Liam. I did have a title for one of the neighborhood kitties I look after who eventually disappeared. He had a small wound on his head that would never heal and was known as Four of the Perpetual Wound. I had started sort of numbering all the black neighbor cats after my black cat Will. There was Junior, Tres, Four and Nickel, whose name I changed later to Seven because that seemed to suit her better. ---

Our female cat talks a blue streak, meowing, murmuring, chirring to us (loudly) and to herself (under her breath). We call her “Gabby.” A friend compared her to a Chatty Kathy Doll, inspiring me to address her as “Gabby Tabby” on more formal occasions. ---

Based on advice given to us by several friends, we decided to try to adopt a bonded pair, which was harder than we thought it would be. We finally found our boys at one of the local humane societies; they were littermates, and at that point, 4 months old. My wife said, “well, we need to give them a matched set of names,” to which I replied, “How about Merry and Pippin?” No other options were necessary. ---

A previous cat was named SBD (Silent, but Deadly), which we shortened to Speedy. His “real” name, according to my husband, was Professor Irving Pantherman, of the Pantherman Institute for Advanced Panther Studies. One of our current kitties is named Gracie Pearl. I know she’s in trouble in hubby’s hobby room when I hear “Graceland Pearlescence!”. ---

The American shorthair we call Brock, who has been with us since Thanksgiving 2009 has the given name of Barack Obama Brown. A couple of months ago, Brock was followed into the apartment by a 3-4 month old long-haired tortoiseshell kitten who has recently consented to accept a permanent position in the throng. Eventually he’s going to answer to the name “Nermal,” both because I don’t intend to stop calling him that and because he’s so fucking CUTE. ---

Most of our cats have had short and generally normal cat names (my wife is the Nickname Master, however, so they all have multiple names they are actually called by). My first cat, though, was a calico Angora titled Princess Alexandra of Denmark, Sandy for short. The first cat we had when I was a kid was T.C., short for The Cat, because none of us could agree on a name. Followed later by the kitten L.C., short for Little Cat of course. ---

To be candid, no I’m not sure. Nermal is still a bit reluctant to be picked up, so I haven’t yet had a good look at the undercarriage. I’ll need to make a note to check at first opportunity. Gonna need to get him/her in to a vet for a checkup and sterilization anyway.
