“Do you know what a whore is, Billy?”

“Yeah, I know what a whore is, and I know what a friend is, and I know what scum is, and if you insult her again I’ll kill you!”
\* \* \*

“FRREEEDDDOOOOOOOMMM!”

Well, I liked it. (The first one; the second is kind of obvious)

Although the bit that got the most play in the ads for _Throw Momma From the Train_ was “You lied to me! BONG!”, my personal favourite remains:

“I can’t say anything over the phone. All I can say is, I killed her last night.”

> “FRREEEDDDOOOOOOOMMM!”

Y’know, I know it’s hip to bag on _Braveheart_, and I know this has been parodied to death, but damn it all if Gibson’s “sons of Scotland” speech at Stirling Bridge doesn’t get my blood pumping every time:

> [@](#):
>
> WALLACE: Sons of Scotland!.. I am William Wallace!
>
> SOLDIER: William Wallace is seven feet tall!
>
> WALLACE: Yes, I have heard! He kills men by the hundreds! And if he were here, he would consume the English with fireballs from his eyes, and bolts of lightning from his arse! [Laughter] I _am_ William Wallace. And I see a whole army of my countrymen, here in defiance of tyranny. You have come to fight as free men. And free men you are! What will you do with freedom? Will you fight?
>
> VETERAN: Against that? We will run–and live!
>
> WALLACE: Yes. Fight and you may die. Run, and you will live…at least awhile. And as you lay dying in your bed many years from now, would you be willing to trade all the days from this day to that, for one change to come back here as young men, and tell our enemies that they make take our lives, but they will never take our FREEDOM! [Scottish cheer that I don’t know how to spell, but means “Scotland Forever!”]

I love that, especially the bit about trading all the days from this one to that. Really good stuff.

Not quite as good as this stirring bit, though:

> [@](#):
>
> This day is called the feast of Crispian:
> He that outlives this day, and comes safe home,
> Will stand a tip-toe when the day is named,
> And rouse him at the name of Crispian.
> He that shall live this day, and see old age,
> Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours,
> And say ‘To-morrow is Saint Crispian:’
> Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars.
> And say ‘These wounds I had on Crispin’s day.’
> Old men forget: yet all shall be forgot,
> But he’ll remember with advantages
> What feats he did that day: then shall our names.
> Familiar in his mouth as household words
> Harry the king, Bedford and Exeter,
> Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester,
> Be in their flowing cups freshly remember’d.
> This story shall the good man teach his son;
> And Crispin Crispian shall ne’er go by,
> From this day to the ending of the world,
> But we in it shall be remember’d;
> We few, we happy few, we band of brothers;
> For he to-day that sheds his blood with me
> Shall be my brother; be he ne’er so vile,
> This day shall gentle his condition:
> And gentlemen in England now a-bed
> Shall think themselves accursed they were not here,
> And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks
> That fought with us upon Saint Crispin’s day.

And since folks are throwing in the Lord of the Rings, from the Two Towers:

> [@](#):
>
> Let this be the hour when we draw swords together. Fell deeds awake. Now for wrath. Now for ruin. And the red dawn!

Theoden really does get a lot of good battlefield lines. And this bit from Fellowship is great, too:

> [@](#):
>
> Our people. _Our people._ …I would have followed you, my brother, my captain, my king.

Very old western, I don’t remember much about, but the penultimate scene from before the final gun battle.

Kid: Are you a bad man?

Gunslinger: Yeah.

Kid: Why?

Gunslinger: I guess I never saw a good man, until too late.

Another one that, I don’t know why, but whenever I get angry at someone or something, this quote comes to mind-

**Henry V**
“I was not angry since I came to France, until this moment!”

Branagh’s rage in the film as the title character, weary from a seemingly endless, unwinable war, comes back to the camps to find the camp followers slaughtered, just gives me chills.

(And makes me use run-on sentances) 😉

There are so many from As Good as it Gets:

Jack/Melvin: “I might be the only person on the face of the earth that knows you’re the greatest woman on earth. I might be the only one who appreciates how amazing you are in every single thing that you do, and how you are with Spencer, “Spence,” and in every single thought that you have, and how you say what you mean, and how you almost always mean something that’s all about being straight and good. I think most people miss that about you, and I watch them, wondering how they can watch you bring their food, and clear their tables and never get that they just met the greatest woman alive. And the fact that I get it makes me feel good, about me.”

“How can you diagnose someone with an obsessive compulsive disorder, then act like I have some choice about barging in here?” - just too funny…

“You make me want to be a better man.” - Weepy

“People who talk in metaphors oughta shampoo my crotch.” - so true

“It’s not true. Some have great stories, pretty stories that take place at lakes with boats and friends and noodle salad. Just no one in this car. But, a lot of people, that’s their story. Good times, noodle salad. What makes it so hard is not that you had it bad, but that you’re that pissed that so many others had it good.”

“You’re a disgrace to depression.”

“‘You saved my life,’ she said… ‘You’d better make it up to me.’”

And from Playing by Heart (which is a really good movie):
Jolie “I love conversations that start with the guy saying “I can’t stop thinking about you.” Mind you I’ve never actually been on the receiving end of any of those conversations”
Greg Kinner: “If you stare at someone long enough, you discover their humanity.”

“You’re why cavemen chiseled on walls.”

“Schindler’s List”

Stern: “This list is an absolute good. The list is life. All around its margins lies the gulf.” - teary

I second the St. Crispin’s Day speech from **Henry V**.

Gandalf’s line from **Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring** :
Frodo: I wish the ring had never come to me. I wish none of this had happened.
Gandalf: So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. _All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us._

Also, a couple lines from Maximus in **Gladiator** :
“Strength and honor.”
“At my signal, unleash Hell.”

I love, love love the LOTR quotes. Here’s a couple more that I love:

## _“Many who live deserve death, and many who die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement. Even the very wise cannot see all ends.”_~Gandalf

Sam:\* "I know. It’s all wrong. By rights we shouldn’t even be here. But we are. It’s like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger they were. And sometimes you didn’t want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened.

But in the end, it’s only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass. A new day will come. And when the sun shines it will shine out the clearer.

Those were the stories that stayed with you. That meant something. Even if you were too small to understand why. But I think, Mr. Frodo, I do understand. I know now. Folk in those stories had lots of chances of turning back only they didn’t. They kept going. Because they were holding on to something."\*

Frodo:\* “What are we holding on to, Sam?”\*

Sam: _“That there’s some good in this world, Mr. Frodo. And it’s worth fighting for.”_
and now for something completely different, here are a couple from **Bull Durham** :

_“I believe in the soul, the cock, the pussy, the small of a woman’s back, the hanging curve ball, high fiber, good scotch, that the novels of Susan Sontag are self-indulgent, overrated crap. I believe Lee Harvey Oswald acted alone. I believe there ought to be a constitutional amendment outlawing Astroturf and the designated hitter. I believe in the sweet spot, soft-core pornography, opening your presents Christmas morning rather than Christmas Eve and I believe in long, slow, deep, soft, wet kisses that last three days.”_~Crash Davis

I have no idea why, but my husband and I quote this one at least weekly:

Skip:_“You guys. You lollygag the ball around the infield. You lollygag your way down to first. You lollygag in and out of the dugout. You know what that makes you? Larry!”_
Larry:_“Lollygaggers!”_
Skip: _“Lollygaggers.”_

That line brings tears to my eyes every time.

Also, anything Katharine Hepburn ever said, though her real life quotes are far better:

“Life is hard. After all, it kills you.”

“I don’t care what is written about me so long as it isn’t true.”

And to remain on topic, here’s one from **Philadelphia Story** :

“The time to make up your mind about people is never.”

The great battlefield speeches by Theoden in LOTR were mostly Tolkien’s…but some of the best lines in the trilogy were purely invented by Jackson, Boyens & Walsh:

> Faramir: And you’re his bodyguard?

Shifting gears…

I’m involved in Little League baseball, and I quote “lollygaggers” a lot. Also Bob Uecker…“Juuuuuuust a bit outside”.

In the “Von Bulow” movie, there’s a scene where they are discussing Von Bulow’s habitual hiring of a prostitute (who, if I recall correctly, was fat and not particularly good-looking) even though he already had a mistress.

The best quote for the beginning of any trip:

Elwood: It’s 180 miles to Chicago. We’ve got a half a tank of gas and a full pack of cigarettes. It’s dark and we’re wearing sunglasses.
