What is the most beautiful song you have ever heard?

Northern Sky, Nick Drake.

Closely followed by:

From the Morning, Nick Drake.
and

Pink Moon, Nick Drake.

You can’t really get anything more beautiful and ethereal and tapped into the somewhere and something else of simple genius than the music of Nick Drake.

This is worth a mention too.

Durutti Column “Never Know”.

Missed the edit window.

Or how about Lips That Would Kiss by the same fella?

Two worth a mention by Martyn Bennett. From his album Grit, Blackbird: I love how he manages to capture the essence of a bagpipe’s sound, without the bagpipes themselves. (He was too weak from chemotherapy at the time he made the album Grit, which he realized was very probably his musical epitaph.) From his self titled first album, I point to Erin. I linked to pages that have soundclips of both songs. (Track 2 is Erin on the Martyn Bennett album page.)

It’s a toss-up between Atmosphere by Joy Division and The Silent Day by Shelleyan Orphan.

There are so many, but I’ll add Ryan Adams’ La Cienega Just Smiled.

Excellent choice! It’s my favorite Santana tune.

Ode to Joy, with the Sing with All the Saints in Glory lyrics. I’ve requested it for my funeral Mass.

“Islands” by King Crimson.

Pink Floyd - Wot’s…uh the Deal? Amazing instrumentation, haunting lyrics, and the Remeber That Night DVD version adds an extra layer of beauty for me, due to the interaction between Dave and Rick. Watch here.

“Llorando(Crying)” by Rebecca Del Rio from Mulholland Dr..

“End of My Journey” by Harry Stewart from Cadence

“Maggot Brain” by Eddie Hazel of Funkadelic

…I hope those are the right links; I can’t use Youtube at work so I got them though Yahoo.

Lovely thread!

Breathe Me by Sia moves me to tears every single time. That’s the song on the closing moments of the last episode of Six Feet Under.

I’ll Do the Talking” from the sadly forshortened career of Cruella DeVille.

Has anybody mentioned O Magnum Mysterium yet? Morten Lauridsen does a particularly gorgeous version (you can YouTube it).

“Breathe” by Pink Floyd

“The Rain Song” by Led Zeppelin

“I´ve Loved These Days” by Billy Joel

“Until the Night” by Billy Joel

and

“Strangers in the Night” by Frank Sinatra

Yeah, I just don´t have one to choose. I like many.

What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong

He Stopped Loving Her Today by George Jones

We’ll Meet Again by Johnny Cash

Georgia by Ray Charles

But it’s hard to beat Ode to Joy from Beethoven’s 9th Symphony.

Nirvana by El Bosco.

Chaplet of Divine Mercy in Song, particularly beginning at 0:57.

Held by Natalie Grant, particularly beginning at 1:03.

Well, I am very happy to see you guys/ladies enjoying the thread. What is really interesting here are all the different opinions of what consititutes beautiful to them. By the way I like Eva Cassidy as well. Very sweet voice.

One of my newest favorites is “I Didn’t Know I’d Love You So Much” from Repo! The Genetic Opera, sang by Anthony Stewart Head and Alexa Vega. A tender father/daughter duet.

Indeedy.

Plus “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” doesn’t matter who sings it, it’s beautiful
