On the road to Talladega one weekend, we passed a DIY “motor home” that was clearly going to the race. They had taken one of those big old pickups from the 1970s and somehow got a good bit of a prefab house installed up on the bed, to turn the truck into a “camper” of sorts. The original truck appeared to be made entirely of Bondo. The best part: On both sides, they had quite obviously used electrical tape to spell out their life motto: GIT ‘R’ DONE I kinda wanted to go hang out with them, but we were driving my wife’s 2001 Beetle. I was WAY out-manned. ---

68 dodge blue pickup. Rusty as hell, loud exhaust, swampers, foglights, and a bumper sticker that read, “Endangered Species: White Male” ---

I once worked with the late Paul Von Bank. He was a master welder, but he needed some artistic guidance. One of his projects had the core (front half of the cockpit) of a Chevy Vega. Behind that was a sectioned (width and length) El Camino pickup bed. The doghouse was the surgically altered hood and front fenders of a Chevy Caprice, shrunk to fit. It had a big V-8 and a beefy drivetrain, and fat tires all around. The whole package looked almost right, sorta. I once lived next door to a certified redneck with a project car in the side yard. It was a Ford Torino Ranchero, with a pair of rear fenders in the bed. The hood was up, and there was **an 8 foot poplar tree growing up through the engine bay!** ---

In my hometown there’s a store called “THe Gun Rack”. The owner drives a crappy old minivan with a gun rack in the back, with the store information on the sides. The best part is on the back there is “try and highjack this Osama!” written across the windshield. ---

That reminds me of a car that either a friend or a friend’s brother owned. It was a Caprice from '82 or so with body parts from almost a dozen other Caprices, all different colors and a giant band-aid sticker that said “OUCH!” covering a dent in the right front fender. ---

I found, and almost bid on, an early '70s International Scout with a 6" lift and 35" tires. It was painted like the General Lee. Og, I loves the Ebay. ---

I have seen so many I couldn’t pick one but generally, any $500 car with $2000 worth of rims and tires makes me think “redneck”. ---

Ooh, in college (and in California) we used to line the neighbor’s big ol’ lifted F350 with plastic and drive down to the nearby laundromat. They had unwisely placed a hot water spigot outside where we could get to it, so we’d load that thing up with hot water and drive it back to the apartments. Red neck hot tub!
