What is the name of the music that played in the background of Andy Rooney’s memorial to those who died in the most recent Iraq war?

I’ve noticed how often it’s played for a ‘tragic’ scene and have always wondered what it was and who wrote it.

It’s Samuel Barber’s **Adagio for Strings** (arranged from the 2nd movement of his String Quartet, Op. 11).

It was memorably used in the 1986 film [Platoon](http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0091763/).
