The solution to being poor is obvious. Get a job. If the job does not pay enough, get a better job or several jobs. If a better job requires better education, get better educated. If holding jobs limits access to education, get educated part-time or on-line. You are on-line, so you have access to higher education, so you have the ability to make yourself more employable. This should take poverty out of your equation, leaving you with only gender and ethnicity to be considered. If you are concerned about affirmative action programs preventing people of your gender and ethnicity from obtaining higher education and successful careers, then come up with credible evidence which shows white males holding proportionately fewer higher degrees and fewer high level careers than people of other genders and ethnicities. You ask what scholarships are available to poor white males. A great many scholarships are available to people without reference to ethnicity or gender. You complain about having difficulty in getting a novel published. This is common to most novelists regardless of gender or ethnicity. You note that many ethnic and gender groups have programs available which open doors. You fail to note that many predominantly white male organizations exist for the purpose of opening doors ostensibly without regard to ethnicity or gender, and you fail to note if you have participated in such organizations. In short, what you have presented in this thread indicates that you have confused your own personal inability to succeed, and your own personal inability to recognize and take advantage of opportunities, with affirmative action available to other groups. This type of thinking – inductive generalization – might have something to do with your difficulties. I suspect that even if there were no affirmative action programs out there for anyone, you would still face significant challenges in obtaining your career goals. Either change your career goals to something more realistically obtainable with your skill set as it now stands, or work on your skill set. You state: “I am 25 years old . . . [and] I have gotten very little even after paying my dues.” I suggest that at twenty-five, you have hardly begun to pay dues. Why is it that you are posting your thread rather than hustling to balance jobs and school? Why are you spending time looking for excuses rather than simply persevering until you succeed? Time is money, so use your time to keep paying dues as long as it takes. Don’t throw time away unless you can afford to, for it is one asset which you cannot get back. At twenty-five, the world is your oyster, regardless of your being poor. Have the sense to open it, rather than being concerned about others opening theirs. ---

Wow, it sure is apparent why you guys are having such a hard time getting ahead in life. Attitude and behaviour can be big factors in limiting one’s potential, regardless of what perceived or actual disadvantages one faces. I’m outta here. Let’s all take a tip from Mr. Stewart and just get up off the ground, that’s all I ask. Get up there with that lady that’s up on top of this Capitol dome, that lady that stands for liberty. Take a look at this country through her eyes if you really want to see something. And you won’t just see scenery; you’ll see the whole parade of what Man’s carved out for himself, after centuries of fighting. Fighting for something better than just jungle law, fighting so as he can stand on his own two feet, free and decent, like he was created, no matter what his race, color, or creed. That’s what you’d see. There’s no place out there for graft, or greed, or lies, or compromise with human liberties. And, uh, if that’s what the grownups have done with this world that was given to them, then we’d better get those boys’ camps started fast and see what the kids can do. And it’s not too late, because this country is bigger than the Taylors, or you, or me, or anything else. Great principles don’t get lost once they come to light. They’re right here; you just have to see them again! ---
