Years ago, I was walking though a relativily isolated and inacessable section of the forest. On the ground, I found a little dried-up starfish. How it got there, I have no idea. It didn’t look like the common or arificially dyed kinds they sell as souveniers. I was 200+ miles from the nearest ocean at the time; there are no freshwater starfish. Perhaps someone brought it back from vacation, whereby a bird picked it up and discarded it in the middle of the woods. Otherwise, I’m perplexed.

I found a girl’s driver’s liscence once. Not weird itself, but she looked eerily like me. I probably could have used it as ID. Weird.

I didn’t find it, but I was at the doctor once compplaining of an earache. After poking and prodding a lot, the doctor finally pulled out a 9-inch long peice of kitchen string. Out of my ear. It was waxy. No, I have never put string in my ear. I have no idea in holy hell how it got there.

Wow, that is some pretty strange stuff, y’all.

Two things I have found:

I was about six years old: my friend and I were fooling around in the neighbor’s bushes and found a bloody axe with white hairs on it, as well as what appeared to be a dog’s tail.
While walking my dog on the sidewalk of a busy street, I found a live hermit crab crawling along. Took it home, provided it with the appropriate needs, and it lived for some time.

In the street, in front of my parents’ house, I found a silver cake server. You know, the kind you buy for a wedding, and have it engraved. It was just laying at the foot of the driveway.

It said, “William & Barbara So-and-So” and had a date on it.

The odd thing is that my parents’ names are William and Barbara. But the date was off by many years. (I think it was '85. My parents were married in 1965.) I’m sure someone got divorced, and chucked this thing in the trash. But it was an odd thing to find at the foot of the driveway.

Ayup. The iinteresting thing about the magazines is that they weren’t about Disney characters. I could possibly understand if they had been about Belle or Cinderella or Snow White, but they were about the Disney theme parks themselves.

As of yesterday, a 1940 dime. I once found a 1956 shilling in the parking lot behind my apartment house.

But for rare old coins, the record is the nickel I got from 7-11 dated 1907! I wonder how much it will be worth in 5 years.

In the summer of 2001, on the steps of the state capitol in Madison, WI, I found a teeny pin that proclaimed “DOLE” in capital letters. He ran in what? 1996? and it was still there. I kept it, even though I’m a democrat (I like campaign relics - they’re neat). I do admire Bob Dole, though.

My aunt found a little Odie stuffed toy somewhere near Boulder, CO. He had a suction cup attached to his paw and a “Ho, Ho, Ho” button attached to his rear. We removed said cup and button and took him on trips with us where ever we went. Dog’s been to Australia, New Zealand, China, Qatar, Russia, England, various and sundry U.S. locations, yikes…more places than most people in the family. My brother lost him about a year ago in a hotel Singapore, which caused great sadness in the family (thank all that’s holy it wasn’t me!). We like to think some nice family’s found him and his travels continue.

don’t know if this counts as “finding”, but years ago at school when I was about 14, our English class had finished the book set for us to study and there was still a week to go before the end of the school year, so our teacher went out to the book store and brought back a mixed up box of various classic fiction for us to read and went round handing them out arbitrarily.

I opened the one I was given and found my mother’s maiden name in the front. She had been a pupil at the same school 30 years before.

A wooden half barrell. Found it in the woods while snowmobling in far northern Wisconsin. I don’t know how long ago they stopped making wooden half barrells, or how it got out in the middle of a thick forest but it was pretty cool.

A dog’s decapitated head in the woods near my house (rather freshly separated from body, too).

People leave weird stuff in books that they donate to used bookstores. Lots of photos, old love letters, etc. but I did once run across a used condom doing duty as a bookmark. Yech.

Well, **Bosda** , I suppose that’s possible… this thing WAS pretty small, though. It might be interesting, if I cared, to empty out all that trash and see how big it really is. Not interesting enough to make me really want to do it, but enough to ponder. With all that stuff in there, I certainly don’t think even I could fit very comfortably, and I’m a small guy.
