What is the war movie (historical) you'd like to see made?

I think it would be pretty cool to see modern filmmaking’s take on some large scale battleship duels like the Battle of Jutland, the sinking of the Bismark, and the Battle of Layte Gulf.

No, they will make the Legionnaires the bad guys.

I know it would be a rough one to do. Probably impossible. Not from a technical aspect but from a narrative one. How can you make a movie about Otto Skorzeny? He was an SS officer so of course you can’t make him the hero. But he was one of the biggest bad asses in history and a unique character. And after all the shit he pulled off during the war he managed to survive. He became Nassar’s military advisor, was an advisor to Peron and Evita’s bodyguard and then went on to work for the Mossad. It would be an amazing movie if he would have been on the right side.

I would love to see a realistic movie about the Battle of Kursk. Real tank battles in the biggest tank battle in history.

Well, Harry Turtledove made him a good guy in his Worldwar tetralogy. I think that’s as close as you’re going to get.

One Man’s Hero is about the Saint Patrick’s Battallion, a group of Irish-Americans who deserted from the U.S. Army and joined the Mexican Army.

Wikipedia lists several 1812 films. There is also a low-budget Canadian TV movie called The King’s Regiment.

I’ll second that. “Chatfield, there seems to be something wrong with our bloody ships today.”

Maybe Coronel or the Falklands…

The Battle off Samar. Four American destroyers attacking four Japanese battleships and their escorts!
Surigao Strait might make a good movie, too.

You might be interested in the book “To War in a Stringbag”. The author was a Swordfish pilot who took part in the attack and was later captured by the Vichy French.

Oh, yeah. Escort carriers vs cruisers. If they can work “Taffy” into the title all the better.

Not truly, in the last book he’s pretty much a villain.

There’s a Russian version of this. The German tanks massed near the middle of the screen look authentic, but if you watch the ones maneuvering at the edges you can see they’re modern T-62s.

Other than that, it’s one hell of a movie!.

I was going to suggest this too. Captain EE Evans is a personal hero of mine.

Does 1982 count as historical? If so, I think there’s an epic movie in the Falklands War - naval battles, air-to-air dogfighting and bayonets-in-the-mud infantry combat. Submarines. Controversy.

There was a BBC show about it, but I don’t think it was the kind of war movie we’re discussing here.

I would love to see a big budget movie made of Léo Major: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/L%C3%A9o_Major
He pretty much single handedly took the city of Zwolle from the Germans and his exploits read like something you would be hard pressed to make up.
Due to him being Canadian (though technically born in the US) it’ll probably never happen though.

Thanks, I’ll check it out

Has there been a movie about Mad Jack Churchill?

Or Mad Anthony Wayne?

Pavlov’s House.

Anything from the writings of Ernie Pyle, especially Here Is Your War.

The Story of G.I. Joe

and
GI Joe: The Ernie Pyle Story

Those are definitely on my list.
