Years ago, my boyfriend took me to Chicago to meet my future inlaws. I met his grandmother, great grandmother and “Auntie Mommy” in another elderly aunt’s yard. The temperature was hovering around 100 degrees. They sent Michael to bring out drinks. When he brought me a nice cold beer, they chastised him “Beer isn’t a lady’s drink. Bring her a nice pink gin.” They had a huge pitcher of gin and pink Angostura bitters served in water glasses, unchilled, no ice, that they were all drinking, 'cause, you know, it’s a lady’s drink. Gah, I don’t know if it was the heat, the warm gin and bitters, or just plain jealousy that I didn’t get a cold beer, but I recall that as a majorly nasty drink. Well, series of drinks because I’m always polite to elderly ladies.😃 ---

Jeremiah Weed. That brings back a long-buried impression. I may be mistaken, but I seem to recall that stuff tasting of geraniums. I tried it once, back in the early 1980s. ---

I’ve had Ouzo, Grappa, Soju and Bathtub Tequila at various times in my life, but the absolute worst thing I’ve ever drank was Sam Adams Triple Bock. More like a bad port wine than a beer, it was terrible. Part of their Extreme Brewing division, which should never have seen the light of day. ---

Mike’s Hard Cola. Proof that even the best can leave a turd in the pool occasionally. A coworker left a 5-pack (a 6-pack with one taken) in the lunch fridge at work and said that anyone who wanted it could take it. I took one of the bottles home that night and tried it. After a few sips, I poured the rest down the sink. Bleck! ---

Many years ago, my (late) father-in-law mixed me what he called a “Perfect Manhattan.” I don’t know what proportions hew used and I am almost certain there were no bitters in it, but it was barely drinkable. Next, would be Jagermeister, but I never cared much for licorice, anyway. More recently, some of the bottled domestic tomato juice & beer concoctions that try to pass themselves off as Chavela or Michelada are gruesome. Stick to the hand mixed from scratch originals. ---

One healthy shot of Jäger, one healthy shot of Three Olives brand Bubblegum Vodka (both ideally kept in the freezer) on ice. Top with Cream Soda. Luscious goodness, with the Jäger taste completely hidden. Under bubblegum and cream soda. ---

There is a kind of brandy that tastes like almonds. I think it may be made from almonds. People might get to like it. But it would be an acquired taste. The only time I tried, it was like drinking liquid fire. I recall in Godfather 2, someone asked for “Anisette”. From Wikipedia, “Anisette is an anise-flavored liqueur that is consumed in most Mediterranean countries, mainly in Spain, Italy, Portugal, Turkey, and France. It is colorless and, unlike some other anise-based liqueurs, contains no licorice”. This drink I tried was no Anisette. But it was kind of close I think. I found it. It was Disaronno. I can see how some people might acquire a taste for it. ---

What do people think of Seagram’s? Is it Scotch? I once tried Bourbon and quite liked that. I also once tried Rye and hated it. It made me feel sick. It’s not worth starting a new thread. But what is the best kind of Scotch? Is it single malt? Or Double Malt? And how does the age figure into it? I have heard of ten year old and twenty year old? What is the best Scotch available to the general public and how much does it cost? ---

If you are going to go down this route I suspect a separate thread is the way to go - and probably in Great Debates! Seagram’s? Well, Scotch has to be made and bottled in Scotland to be called Scotch Whisky. The Seagram brands I know of are American, Canadian or Indian - so all whiskey not Scotch - not even whisky. Generally malt whisky is valued over grain (which includes the Rye you hate so much), generally single malt (one distillery) over blended, generally ages between 12 and 24 years over older or younger whisky, sometimes single cask whisky (one cask from one distillery) as produced by certain private bottlers (for instance the Scotch Malt Whisky Society). Those are all trends and after that it is all a matter of taste. Personally I drink mostly Glenfarclas, Highland Park and Bunnahabhain - and find 16 years is about the ideal price point between quality and cost. Obviously everyone’s views will differ - unless you start adding ice let along mixers to Scotch whereupon I will have to hunt you down and slaughter you. :mad: ---
