The hairdo from the 60’s ! UGH! I use to sleep with huge curlers and use of hairspray to keep my hair in place all day !

Nehru shirt, worn once to a party to impress a girl. I was in 7th grade, but that doesn’t excuse my parents for allowing it to happen.

I have a 7th grade school photo of myself wearing bright green flannel plaid, a cowgirl hat (I did not live in the south), hoop earrings and pink-tinted glasses. I’m not sure any of those things were ever a ‘‘trend’’ except in my own sad little world.

The worst has to be neon orange/yellow beach volleyball trunks. Got them at Nordstroms. Hey, it was the 80’s. Sorry, but no pics were ever taken.

Elephant bell jeans with patch pockets along with platform shoes.
Polyester leisure suits.
Leather trimmed blue denim 3-piece suit.

The one fad I refused to follow at all was “popped collars” back in the early 80s.

Double knit suit, Qiana shirt in a bright pattern, and platform shoes.

In 8th grade, Poncho shirts were in. They were shirts with V-shaped hems that you were supposed to wear outside your pants. But we were not allowed to wear untucked shirts in school, so we had to tuck them in, thus spoiling the look. So we rebelled by wearing our belts with the belt buckles on the side.

Let’s see, I had a baggie pair of short alls. I pegged my pants. I had a hypercolor shirt (that I desperately wanted.) I had a bad perm for all of high school. In college I wore body suits and vests with pleated jeans. But I got my husband’s attention with that combo, so I don’t really regret it.

I did not have mall bangs though. I made fun of mall bangs and gave them nick names, like “the waterfall,” and “Sally Brown puffball.”

:: sigh ::

Salmon pink leisure suit. With one of those plasticky-polyester gaudy Hawaiianesque shirts with the wing collars and wing cuffs sticking out of it, no less.

In my defense, I was 17 and was very heavily pressured into it by my mom and my sister.

Those long athletic socks – white with two colored stripes near the top edge – while wearing (tight) shorts. Horrific. This would be circa 1985 (of course).

ETA: Bullitt, you too? We need to start a support group, to recover from the trauma. 🙂

In fifth grade, circa 1978 or so, I somehow came into possession of a pair of cork-soled wedge sandals. I thought they were da bomb. They were tacky.

Middle school – oxford shirts with coordinating grosgrain ribbon around the neck tied in a bow. Worn with jeans.

Again middle school, there were these OP down jackets with zip-off sleeves. Wearing them as a vest made some sense. Wearing just the sleeves made no sense at all. And it was hard to carry your books.

Prom: one year, I wore a dress that I intellectually now know was a spangled horror, but it did look good on me (allowing for the fashion at the time), and I loved it. Beautiful cobalt blue color, strapless bodice covered in sequins. The floor-length skirt was layers of fine cobalt-blue iridescent tulle. With a ruffle on the bottom. The worst part was, it was not even the most overly gooped-up dress at that prom. It was 1988. That’s my excuse.
Ironically, my stepmother preferred all of the above to my punk/Goth days, my hippie chick days, or the fact that I’m now 46 y/o and won’t get a “proper” short haircut.

I don’t think recovery is possible - especially since this thread reminded us that we wore them.

my teen years in the 1970’s were innocent of that era’s excesses: disco was for girls, Black, Hispanic and gay guys, so us white guys held on to the denim and war-surplus remnants of the hard rock 60s. In college I transitioned into preppy (since, in the early 80’s, thrift stores had a lot of early 60’s Pendelton shirts and straight leg trousers). For my wedding in 1983, we eschewed the mariachi band ruffles, cummerbund and tropical fish-colored tuxes for pearl gray Edwardian morning wear.

The worst fashion sin I will confess is reverse pleats.

I can’t say that I loved (or hell, even liked) them, but parachute pants were in when we moved, so I wanted to fit in. Jeez, what a disaster. Especially since, even in a small backwater town, I think the trend had already passed me by when I wore them just once. They looked horrible on me. As did the neon yellow nail polish (during the Wham years) that made me look like I had boogers on all my fingertips. And my wedding dress (circa 1993) that I still have, had a giant ass satin bow on the butt to go with the (unintentional) asymmetrical hairstyle I’d been sporting in our engagement pictures. Sheesh.

I let my hair grow out in the back.
This was when I was already pretty bald on top, and although I could _almost_ pull it off, it was (and remains) a ridiculous look. I much prefer my current, neatly trimmed “Jean Luc Picard” look.

I had mall bangs. The “Sally Brown puffball” to be exact. 😃 And I held onto them waaaay too long. I’m sure I’m personally responsible for at least part of the hole in the ozone layer.

Combine the mall bangs with the popped-collar polo shirts and the vertical-striped neon eyeshadow and I was quite the sight. Why yes, I did grow up in the 80’s!
