What is You Can Call me Al about?

One has to think, that if Paul Simon ever saw this thread, he would laugh his ass off.

And not tell us anything about what the song means.

You’re totally right, and I knew that it was bat-faced because that line always cracks me up! Stupid typos!

Good video; I don’t remember that.

I heard Simon interviewed once (on NPR, I think?) and he said, as Wiki does, that the germ of the song was when a party host mistakenly, and cluelessly, called him “Al.” Not much more to it than that, according to Simon.

Al Gore used the song quite a bit in his VP campaign in 1992, and Simon performed it at one of the inaugural parties in 1993. I also once saw it very cleverly set to footage of Al Sharpton.

Well, Chevy was a musician of sorts – he was the drummer in the band that eventually became Steely Dan.

People have been speculating about the meaning of this song for decades. Perhaps he’d say “You know I don’t find this stuff amusing anymore.”

The reason why this song exists is for this tribute to Al Swearengen:

That is pretty frigging brilliant.
