You’re right, you must not be a dog man! Stupidity and uncleanliness are usually traits displayed by bad dog _owners_. Dogs, OTOH, are generally bright, loyal, clean and hardworking. Of course, that varies by breed and what purpose the breed is supposed to serve. One dog’s work might be holding down the couch rather than retrieving ducks.

‘working’ dogs maybe. (guide dogs, police dogs, rescue dogs etc…) but ‘working’ dogs probably make up for less than one percent of all domesticated dogs.

I am a cat man. I have become used to the independent, clean, proud, dignified nature of cats. By comparison dogs seem to be in another world entirely. Independence - none, they totally depend on their owners. Cleanliness - well I have never met a dirty smelly cat. I meet plenty of dogs that _stink_ and have matted horrible fur. Pride - I can’t detect an ounce of pride in any dog (except border collies). Dignity - how dignified is sitting with your tongue out looking as if you are desperate for your owner to ask you to fetch something.

I like cats and border collies. And I can stretch to liking a select few other breeds of dogs (those blonde labradors, not sure of their proper name, to name but one)

I absolutely detest all _little_ dogs. They seem to be hardwired to annoy. Their bark makes you want to cut your ears off. They look ugly. They refuse to eat what you give them - instead trying to eat the food you’ve given to another dog (which happens to be exactly the same food). They piss on every vertical object in sight.

I am probably biassed - I had to look after my grandparent’s dog - which has mastered the art of annoyLobsang. I also had a good friend who despised dogs and loved cats.

Don’t listen to me. Keep loving your muts.

Soft-coated Wheaten Terrier

These wonderful dogs have all the great terrier qualities–smart, loyal, obedient, energetic–and also are super with kids: very gentle, not at all territorial, playful, and easy to train. Best of all, they are hypoallergenic and so fine for dog lovers who happen to be allergic to most dogs and they don’t shed. I used to take my wheaten to work with me, even when she was less than a year old, and she would sit quietly by my desk throughout the day without being a bother at all, but would be ready for action whenever I was. Our 2-year-old would interrupt the dog while she was eating so that he could feed her by hand yet there was never any problem there either. A smart, gentle, fun, happy, and flexible dog.

I’ve only met one Golden that I didn’t love - and even then, I didn’t dislike him…the rest have been wonderful.

Still, when I think about getting a dog one day - I’m thinking Samoyed

I believe whippets are the best kept secret of the dog world…loving, snuggly and generally possessed of a keen sense of humour. In short, everything you can depend on a greyhound to be but half-size and with (generally, provided you do your research on the breeder and their breeding practices) fewer medical concerns.

That said, I think our future dogs will be either rescued greyhounds and/or whippets as they are growing enough in popularity that those who are not worthy are getting them, keeping them through those crucial formative months, then dumping them claiming that the dog is too stupid, demanding, or whatever else they are projecting on to the poor dog.

Not to hijack, but the world will be a better place when everyone realises that creating a life is a responsibility and not a right, a privilege and not a profit venture. [/end preaching]

Wow, are you a vet? You really do know a lot about dogs. All the little ones do exactly what you just described.
Maybe you should write a book!

"Cleanliness - well I have never met a dirty smelly cat. "

Yes, but cats shit in your house in a litter box and YOU clean it out.

Cats and dogs in the house are both equally as dirty, IMHO.

I like Beagles, Dalmations - I have been told though that those are not the best dogs to own, Basengi, Greyhounds, also Whippets - I have been told are good to own.

If i had a Dalmation, I would name him Spot or Dot.
If I had a Whippet, I would name him DEVO.
If I had a Brindled Greyhound, I would name him Paisley.

Don’t know what I would name a Beagle or Basengi.

Boxers are my favorite. I have an 11 1/2 yr old male. He’s been doing well until now. We went away for a week and he stayed with my grandfather. The past 24 hours, he just hasn’t been himself. _tears_ Ugh

Grew up with mutts until we got a Saint. What a wonderful dog. She topped 200 pounds and was the biggest Saint anyone (vets, visitors) had ever seen. I still miss that dog. Bone cancer.

Sister has a Newfoundland. He’s small for his breed, only about 110 when he’s at a good weight. He’s 11 which is pretty old for a Newf.

Other sister has a Boxer who is fun but horrible with visitors or children. She’s too aggressive and tends to knock people down without even trying. She just doesn’t seem aware of how big and strong she is, completely unlike the other sister’s Newfie.

We have cats, but I love dogs. I adore sight hounds, especially. Oh, and Corgis. And Pekes. And well, I love dogs.

And did anyone else watch the dog show over the weekend on Animal Planet? The guy put his pug on a treadmill and it made my heart hurt that dog was so damned cute!

I have to chime in for the Boxers. One of mine is staring at me as I type this, daring me to grab her squeaky toy. The other one is snoring at my feet.

I was raised with Labradors - great dogs, but I’m over them. Boxers are the light of my life now. Can’t imagine ever being without one. However, someday I will add a pug or two to the mix.

I have to speak up in defense of little dogs. I have one; he’s my adorable, cinnamon-colored **chihuahua** named Kermit…he’s way too big for a chihuahua, weighing in at ten pounds, but he’s very sweet, doesn’t yelp or bark excessively, loves to sit in your lap, and hasn’t ever met a person he doesn’t like. (Okay, some people he regards suspiciously until he’s decided they’re okay, but so do most dogs.)

And chihuahuas don’t smell like dogs. They never get that doggie smell, even if you don’t bathe them; Kermit gets a bath about once every two or three months unless he gets dirty outside, and he _never_ smells. Even Mr. Levins’ mother, who is a notorious indoor-pet-hater, commented on his lack of doggie odor. This is one of the best traits about a chihuahua.

And my best friend owns two adorable Yorkies, and they’re the most well-behaved, sweetest dogs I’ve ever met. (They’re better than Kermit, but that’s b/c she trains them better than I do.)

Little dogs are frequently monsters b/c people don’t train and treat them like dogs b/c of their size, but they’re just as capable of being sweet, mellow, well-behaved doggies as their bigger cousins. And I’ve met a lot of ill-behaved big dogs, so I don’t want to hear it! 😃
