Not to hijack, but this might be a good place to ask…

If I want to get up to speed on classic pulp science fiction, what should be the first books to read?

I’m looking for space adventure of the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers variety. Doc Smith? Burroughs? Where should I start?

Poul Anderson’s stuff is pretty good, though perhaps a bit later than you are looking for.

I think \*Lost Horizon \*by James Hilton is considered one of the first pulp novels and I really liked it.

I’ll check his stuff out anyway. Thanks!

Second that.

If you’re a Thompson fan, you might like Charles Willeford’s stuff, or at least (and especially) his pre-\*Miami Blues \*stuff. I particularly recommend _The High Priest of California_.

Can’t go wrong with either Smith or Burroughs. _Skylark of Space_ is a hoot and a half. For epic space opera that just about defined the term, Smith’s _Lensman_ books are the way to go. Where else will you find interstellar war using **planets** as projectiles?

When I was a kid in the 1950s, I found my dad’s stash of _Weird Tales_ in a box out in the garage. They were moldy and covered with cobwebs, but that just added to the appeal. Warped me for life (in a good way).
