Doc Savage, Destroyer, Executioner (Mack Bolan), Wingman, and several western series…Slocum, Gunsmith, Longarm, Renegade, Edge, Fargo, etc.
Not to hijack, but this might be a good place to ask…
If I want to get up to speed on classic pulp science fiction, what should be the first books to read?
I’m looking for space adventure of the Flash Gordon/Buck Rogers variety. Doc Smith? Burroughs? Where should I start?
Poul Anderson’s stuff is pretty good, though perhaps a bit later than you are looking for.
I think *Lost Horizon *by James Hilton is considered one of the first pulp novels and I really liked it.
I’ll check his stuff out anyway. Thanks!
Second that.
If you’re a Thompson fan, you might like Charles Willeford’s stuff, or at least (and especially) his pre-*Miami Blues *stuff. I particularly recommend The High Priest of California.
Can’t go wrong with either Smith or Burroughs. Skylark of Space is a hoot and a half. For epic space opera that just about defined the term, Smith’s Lensman books are the way to go. Where else will you find interstellar war using planets as projectiles?
Georgette Heyer’s Regency romances.
When I was a kid in the 1950s, I found my dad’s stash of Weird Tales in a box out in the garage. They were moldy and covered with cobwebs, but that just added to the appeal. Warped me for life (in a good way).
