What is your favourite app that most people don’t know about?

I use an alarm clock app called Alarmy.

It has a number of methods to keep you from falling back asleep - you can solve math problems (including some so complex you would HAVE to get paper / pencil and maybe a calculator), you can repeat a pattern on a grid, you can take a photograph (that, presumably, requires you to get out of bed). There are additional options as well, but those require the premium version - which is a subscription vs a one-time purchase, so I haven’t ponied up for that.

Merlin will also identify the bird from its sound - found that out a few months ago when we were in the mountains of NC.

(yeah, I know - zombie thread. Stumbled across it when doing something else).

Cool, I’ll look for it!

Radio Garden. A map-driven portal to thousands of live radio stations across the world.

So its almost too late as the developers seem to have given up and its code rotted to the point of being less useful (but hey maybe the awesome power of the Straight Dope Message Board will convince them to restart development  )…

But Maprika is by far the best hiking/biking map app. The killer feature is it allows you to upload your own trail maps. So you can upload the map from a park website, and then sync it to OpenStreetMap map, and then use it on your hike, with all the features synced to their real-life lat-lon. This is a massive improvement on anything else, as (even though Google and OSM have got better about recording trails properly) the quality of the trail map the produced by the park itself (e.g. NPS, or regional park org) is always better than just using Google Maps or OSM.

This is the winner. If I didn’t have my “bright light in your face” wakeup lamp I’d probably go for something like this.

Well, it may be kinda twee for this crowd, but my favorite app at the moment is Finch. It’s a self-care app designed for people with chronic illness, mental health problems etc. You get a little pet bird. I named my bird Chicken because my son calls every bird a chicken. Okay, so you complete self-care activities to "Level Up’’ your Finch, and when you energize it you can send it on little adventures and earn clothes and furniture for its house. So last month’s theme was Steampunk, where I dressed Chicken in a little vest and gave him a bowler hat and a monocle. And this month’s theme is Halloween Costume Party. Chicken is currently dressed like a scarecrow and its house is getting spookier by the day. You can also send it on special journeys all over the world. Right now Chicken is in Bali.

For whatever reason, dressing up a cartoon Finch is what does it for me. I’ve managed to piece together an ace morning routine that I have been doing consistently almost every day. There are days when it is my sole motivation to move onto the next thing. It’s a very gentle and sweet and warm and encouraging app, just what you need if you’re having a hard day.

Been using it for a while. I wish I spoke more languages.
