What is your least favorite Straight Dope message board?

I never visit MPSISMIMSISM unless I’m reeeeeally bored…most of the topics seem like IMHO also-rans.

  • About This Message Board*

Worst - The Pit. I hardly ever go there, it’s a vile place. I’ll only go there if I follow a link. And even then I don’t join the shit hurling contest. Unless it’s someone specifically hurling shit at me.

Second worst - Great debates. Most of it is either religion, or American politics, neither one of which interests me.

For those interested, here’s the ranking of forums by post count and the percentages:

  1. MPSIMS 19.5%
  2. Cafe Society 19.3%
  3. General Questions 17.1%
  4. The Pit 15.6%
  5. IMHO 14.9%
  6. Great Debates 12.1%
  7. ATMB 0.9 %
  8. CCC 0.5%
  9. CSR 0.2%

#8 and #9

I used to avoid Great Debates, but I’ve been reading it a lot more recently. Now if I could get up the courage to actually post…

GQ. All too often, people offer uneducated opinions as fact, and solid info offered by people with experience gets sidelined. I seldom bother to post info there anymore. I’ll ask an occasional specific question which has a chance of getting a decent answer, but that’s about it.

I don’t think I’ve ever read a whole post in Great Debates, but anything above Cafe Society is not of much interest to me. I do go to ATMB if there’s been a banning and I want to know about it.

A shame. It was people like you and Stranger on a Train’s answers in GQ that got me interested in joining the board.

Many people can tell the difference between information and guess work even if they don’t post to say it.

Personally, I never go into Great Debates. For the same reasons already mentioned.
You can see how the entire four pages are going to go after five posts.

MPSIMS. I’m not really counting the comments forums or ATMB.

I only check MPSIMS if I’m bored.

I don’t post in Great Debates, but not because I don’t find it interesting. I don’t have the conviction, the smarts, or the energy to compete in there. I always liked listening to the grown-ups talk when I was a kid…

CCC. It seems the second post is always, “Thanks for your post. It is customary to include a link…”

And I hardly ever read the columns.

Regards,
Shodan

You have any idea how easy it would be to get a lynch mob right now, if I knew where you lived ?

Why are you even here, then?

JRB

Great Debates, for the reasons Phase42 articulated.

I’ve never once clicked on Comments about Cecil’s Columns or Comments on Staff Reports.

I was going to say Great Debates, until I read the thread, and was reminded that Comments on Cecil’s columns exists.

I ignore GD but have to admit that Comments qualifies as my least favorite, since I forgot about it, even though it’s right there in front of my eyes every evening when I sign in.

Great Debates - I don’t get it. The Pit can at least be funny at times…

Edit: Woo Hoo! 100 posts!

I almost never visit the Comments forums. Of the ones I do read regularly, easily the most tedious is Great Debates, given that so many of the so-called debates seem to devolve into soem obnoxious git making repetitive, unsupported assertions while metaphorically sticking their fingers in their ears. Oughtta be called Great Harangues, although they’re mostly not, really.

I almost never go to the top three. Rarely GQ. Depending on my mood, my browsing order is either: GD, Pit, IMHO, MPSIMS, CS or IMHO, MPSIMS, CS, GD, Pit.

I was gonna say that you’d better hope that Shodan isn’t black and that Al Sharpton doesn’t read these boards, but then I saw you’re in the UK where you don’t have to worry about that kind of thing

I visit Great Debates least of all. I’ve got no time for the fussing and the fighting.
