“God Bless the USA” is a bit of a running joke between my wife and me. We always make comments about Lee Greenwood paying the mortgage on Independence Day and Memorial Day. A few years ago we were at a small town fireworks show and the DJ was playing random patriotic music as the local fire department shot off the fireworks. He managed to play the song twice and we looked at each other and simultaneously announced “Ah, the rare Double Greenwood!” Once is bad, twice is torture. As for my nomination for most hated, I have to go along with those who have said Hotel California. For a huge band and an enormously huge hit, it’s just a huge pile of suck. Incomprehensible lyrics that are supposed to be deep and meaningful and paint by numbers music. I’ll never understand the love for it. ---

About two-thirds of these songs are ones that I love and sing often, but I was surprised not to see my personal most hated. Please enjoy Celine Dion’s **[My Heart Will Go On](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3gK_2XdjOdY)** from _Titanic_. I just tried to listen, and I could only make it through the first two lines before I had to turn it off. ---

Another gripe. Disclaimer: While I generally don’t care for music from the band ‘YES’ ( or any other “keyboardy” rock ) I do respect their talent and place in the musical world. Anyway, in my late high school and just after years, it seems _every_ kid with a guitar _always_ had to play those first opening bars of the song ‘Roundabout’. It was like a pacifier to them. Over time it was like a bull seeing red to me. I swore that someday I may crack and suddenly grab the guitar from them and bash the hell out of it, John Belushi/Bluto style, and calmly had it back to them with an apology. ---

From Mad Men days when the little woman had to look her best to keep the interest of her hard working man (working in the city with voracious she-devil secretaries) …‘Hey! Little Girl! With great talent comes due responsibility. Some members of Yes split off and formed a mutation called Asia, which put out the most unpleasant noise, and it got way too much air. Also, Yes covered a S&G song called _America_, stretching a nice, tidy 3-minute ramble into a 10 minute long thing that I have not listened to, because _why_? ---

Unfortunately, so do I. Here’s an analysis I did of that miserable song back in 2014: “There are many things that make this song utterly detestable, but near the top of the list for me is the fact that the singer is a complete dick. His wife plants a tree and he laughs at her. Then later she “came runnin’ in all excited/slipped and almost hurt herself/and I laughed till I cried.” Really? What other misfortunes amused you? Her having an incurable disease? Maybe that’s why you couldn’t be bother to be with her the day “the angels came!” She died “One day while I was not at home/While she was there and all alone.” How charming! She died alone. What an asshole!” ---

Jesus…when I was in HS, I decided I wanted to learn bass guitar, so I took some lessons at a local shop. All I wanted was to play in a garage band, but this guy was trying (in vain) to teach me to read music. And one of the pieces of music he had was “Honey”. I was clueless and unassertive, so I took the lessons for a while, then quit and figured out rudimentary bass playing on my own. How bad I was is a topic for another day 🙂 ---

I was in high school when that song topped the charts, and I knew people who loooooved it, so one day I pointed out all of the things you mentioned. And while they agreed with my analysis, they still loved it. I read some comments about that song a long time ago that put forth the idea that when “the angels came,” it meant that she got sick and tired of the creep she was married to and ran off to join the Hell’s Angels. That puts an entirely different spin on the song. ---
