What is you're favorite heavy metal group & song

Although Van Halen is my favorite band, I don’t consider them heavy metal.

I’m a bit biased towards Maiden since I served as “Adrian Smith” for 5 years in a cover band.
My favorites were “Phantom of the Opera”,“Hallowed Be Thy Name” and “The Prisoner” - still a great one to warm up to!
The whole Paranoid album is the epitome of what heavy metal was back then, my personal favorite there is “Fairies Wear Boots”
Megadeth’s “Peace Sells…”
Metallica “For Whom the Bell Tolls”

ETA: Accept - Balls to the Wall!

As someone who primarily listens to metal, this question is damn near impossible to answer. I listen to just about everything from early Sabbath to modern avant-garde metal, so I would have trouble deciding on a favorite sub-genre of metal, let alone a single song.

That said, my all-time favorite band would be Blind Guardian.

I think I may be getting “hard rock” mixed up with “heavy metal”.

Q

I need to put in a plug for modern-day metal: There’s a ton of great stuff.

Favorite band EVER: High on Fire – should particularly appeal to Lemmy fans.
Favorite song: “The Yeti” off of Surrounded by Thieves (YouTube link)

Other great bands:
[ul]
[li]The Melvins, of course!![/li][li]Mastodon[/li][li]Burning Witch[/li][li]The Sword[/li][/ul]
just to name a few…

Metalheads, this is a golden age.

Since Zeppelin is getting very little love here, I’m going with them. The song would have to be Kashmir.

Though they called themselves a blues band, Led Zeppelin.

Well, the blues was their quarry for building heavy metal.

Arcturus, Gojira, Charred Walls of the Damned, Bison BC…

Indeed it is.

While Rainbow never was my fav, if one has to pick the heavy metal song, it’s gotta be Stargazer.

A lot of awesome bands mentioned. I’ll throw in some Sepultura when I’m in the mood.

When I read the title of this thread (or anytime i hear the word Metal), my brain immediately thinks Pantera.

Though if you really pressed me to pick a favorite band/song they probably aren’t the answer.

Lizzy Borden.

Opinion noted.

Count me among the group saying Iron Maiden. Getting a chance to see the Somewhere Back in Time Tour (twice!) after having missed out on the World Slavery Tour as a kid was an absolute dream come true. Having said that…

Favorite Iron Maiden Song - “Hallowed Be Thy Name”

The song I consider to be the purest definition of what Heavy Metal is and should be - Metallica’s “Creeping Death”

I have way too many favorites to list any one band over all the others.

That being said…

If I could only listen to one heavy metal band for the rest of my life, in some sort of bizarre heavy metal desert island situation, Motörhead would be it.

I really love death metal and all the classic Earache bands, but I wouldn’t want to listen to that stuff allthetime

Ditto for black metal. Real black metal fans only listen to it in the winter anyway (adjusts monocle after setting down bone china tea cup).

Black Sabbath with Ozzy was phenomenal, but they only had, what, eight albums together? Not enough to spend all eternity listening to.

Same goes for Metallica. Only four albums and an EP! Not enough material.

Slayer does have a large discography, but each and every album is 100% IN YOUR FACE ALL THE TIME, and like death metal, might get very tiring after awhile.

Motörhead has 21 studio albums, four major line-ups, and songs ranging from IN YOUR FACE HEAVY METAL to relatively radio-friendly classic rock ‘n’ roll (I won’t mention the ballads). Lemmy himself has stated countless times that Motörhead is a rock ‘n’ roll band, and not heavy metal (sure thing Lemmy, not at all heavy metal, gotcha).

Lyrics are generally about life, love, rocking, rolling, riding motorcycles, and playing cards. Very broad themes which would get much less tiresome than hearing about SATAN!!! every other song.

Plus there are cameos by Ozzy, Wendy O. Williams, and Michael Palin, just to shake things up a little.

Finally, Lemmy was previously bassist in The Mighty Hawkwind, so he gets extra credit for that.

[High School Essay] So, for the reasons mentioned above, I most definitely declare Motörhead to be my “desert island” heavy metal band. [/High School Essay]

P.S.

I forgot to add this link:

This is a pretty good way for heavy metal fans to kill time at work. (Just make sure your PC speakers are on mute.)

Am I being whooshed? Metallica had more than four albums.

Ride the Lightning
The Black Album
…And Justice for All
Load
Reload
Master of Puppets
St. Anger
Death Magnetic

I can’t speak for Súil Dubh, but I only see four Metallica albums there.

**Cubsfan **did have a point. I haven’t listened to much new metal since about 1990, so my favorite bands in the genre remain Iron Maiden and Queensyrche. My favorite album is easily Operation: Mindcrime (the original; didn’t much care for the followup except for “I’m American”). My favorite song varies, but Queensryche’s “Revolution Calling” and Maiden’s “Wasted Years” still get a lot of time on my MP3 player.

I’m standing by AC/DC - Thunderstruck.

Guns N Roses in the Appetite for Destruction era takes top band for me. I am almost inclined to give them top album and song(s) as well. Sweet Child O Mine is probably the most played heavy metal song of all time but it isn’t heavy enough to represent the category that well. The same goes for the later November Rain. To better represent the genre, I am naming Enter Sandman by Metallica for top metal song. I like 80’s and 90’s metal much of the newer stuff is basically unlistanable because of the cookie monster singing, poor lyrics, and lack of instrument definition. You can only strip it down and speed it so far and then it all just becomes screams and noise.
