I suppose the most monetarily valuable thing I once had and gave away (or sold for next to nothing in a big lot of toys) was an FX-7. Of course, mine wasn’t carded and this auction was probably a bit of a fluke. But I used to have most everything available from the 80s in Star Wars, Transformers, G.I. Joe, and several other toy lines–my mother and grandmother were far from rich and it makes me a little ill to think of how much of their money went into that stuff. (I also had older stuff, such as 12 inch Lone Ranger, Tonto, and Steve Austin dolls.)
As a middle-aged adult I naturally now want my toys back.
Back in the mid-80s I received a wonderful birthday card from my then-partner. All I remember about it was that it had a monster theme, with all kinds of funny, scary monsters. Soon afterward, we broke up, and I threw out the card. I wish I had saved it.
I wish I still had my Chevy Corvair and, and even the old Chevy Vega. And my first guitar. The strings were barely within walking distance of the fingerboard, but I wish I still had it for nostalgia value.
I threw away many things during a night of mania, including a couple of brand new expensive English saddles. But the only thing I miss is a birthday card from my dad on my 3rd birthday (65 years ago). I’d regularly look at the card, his elaborate handwriting, and chuckle over the nickname he’d given me. It would remind me of a time before alcohol made him a stranger of whom I was afraid.
I let my mother give away my original NES after the SNES had become firmly established. I hadn’t used it in a years, why would I ever use it again?
I also lent my Chrono Trigger cartridge to someone. I completely forgot that I had, and eventually went to play it again to find out that it was gone and I had a vague memory of lending it to someone. Who? I have no idea. I didn’t give it away, but definitely lending without collateral was a poor idea.
My 1983 Harley FXR.
I think it was the last Shovelhead 5 speed Harley.
Handled beautify, sounded great, didn’t leak, never missed a shift. Was the best bike I’ve ever owned. Sold it for down payment on investment property but I still miss it. I’ve been looking for a replacement but the wife says something has to go before I get another bike. Any one want a low mileage 2005 Softail Deluxe?
One of mine is a classic: I sold my copy of Amazing Spider-Man #1 in the mid-1990s. I got good money for it (maybe 5x what I paid) but prices exploded with the Raimi movies came out and demand went up. I don’t regret it that much - I was going to sell, and you’re always going to here some book you had is worth more down the line.
My 2003 BMW 325i w/5-speed with Sport, Cold weather, and Premium packages. That car was just a perfect all-rounder. I haven’t liked the newer ones as much, and that exact combo of features has proven difficult to find nearby.
