2 cars

1. A Jeep CJ-7 body, retrofitted with a modern engine, drivetrain, suspension, interior and all amenities. Failing that, a 2010 Wrangler Rubicon. I have a 2000, which I suppose is a compromise.

2. Something kickass fast and luxurious. Aston-Martin sounds good.

So, **Jettboy** , are you going to anaylze us or what?

Every so often Mercedes seem to get it right.

Along with the famous [Gullwing](http://www.kenrockwell.com/mercedes/starfest-2006/images/02/DSC_3699-gullwing.jpg), I think the McLaren SLR is destined to be a classic. Such a beautiful car.

Somebody down my street has one (MB SLR). Box-stock it looks like a pimped-out caricature of a Mercedes. That is not classy, nor is it a classic.

IMO it’s destined to go down in history as a tasteless icon of the dying days of the \*greed is good / boundless bonuses to know-nothings for doing nothing \*era.

I’m not saying that as sour grapes cuz I can’t afford one. I can afford one. But they look like crap.

I’m pretty fond of my '96 Subaru Legacy wagon. Of course I would fix its current issues (peeling clearcoat on the hood, gas gauge does not work) and it would be pretty cool if it were a hybrid or something more environmentally friendly.

</div>

I’m a new car kind of guy. I have this little fantasy debate with myself often, usually inspiring me to piss away a few bucks on the lottery…I find it great fun. The strange thing is how frequently my tastes will change from month to month.

I totally agree with **Philster** that the [2009 Ferrari California](http://jalopnik.com/5057640/ferrari-california-gets-disrobed-early-in-paris) is one of the sweetest cars going and there’s something to be said for the Ferrari badge if you want to indulge. I have similar feelings towards the [Aston Martin V12 Vantage](http://www.autoblog.com/2009/02/03/geneva-preview-aston-martin-v12-vantage-revealed/).

I’m not a huge fan of the really intensely designed “Supercars” like the Ford GT, Ferrari F430, Bugatti’s and Lamborginis. Many of them are impressive and most are attractive, but I would never want to have one even if I could afford it. The California and Vantage have the same cache but just have a much more understated and refined feel to them. They don’t quite _scream_ “look at me”, they just say it with a raised voice.

Oftentimes I’ll reverse field on that entirely, I generally dislike standing out in a crowd like that and I dislike being overly trendy. I want the California or Vantage because I love cars and technology and would be tolerating the ostentatiousness, but other times I think maybe it’s just not really worth it. If I really had the money to piss away on stuff like that I’d probably get one and drive it only rarely in the country for fun, not downtown to be seen, and then have a much more subtle car for everyday use.

That “subtle” car would still be a damned nice though! Right now I’m thinking I’d sign up for the [Tesla S](http://www.teslamotors.com/models/) to be my everyday grocery getter. Gorgeous car, electric and 4-doors to fit friends and family into. Plus, I probably could get a hold of the designers and actually contribute to the new companies design choices if I were really that filthy rich. It’d be cool to know that my picky tastes contributed to the new Electric Car market.

I think I’d go with the [BMW X6](http://www.autoblog.com/2008/04/11/first-drive-2009-bmw-x6-xdrive35i-and-xdrive50i/) as my winter weather and road-trip car.

Ironically, if I were just reasonably well off as opposed to filthy rich I’d probably not get any of these cars. Since that would probably mean I’d have to settle for just one car I’d merge “practical” and “sports coupe” into one car and go with the [Audi S5](http://www.audiusa.com/audi/us/en2/new_cars/Audi_A5.html).

What I’ll probably end up with as my next car is the [Genesis Coupe](http://www.motortrend.com/photo_gallery/112_0805_2009_hyundai_genesis_photo_gallery/index.html).

I’d drive what any self-respecting nerdy 80s movie fan would drive. Something that is fun even if you look like a fool driving it, because owning one is a whole joke in and of itself. A DeLorean.

Well I guess I’ve been told.

I’ve already had the pleasure of drooling on it.

I could be happy for a couple of years just sitting in it and listening to the engine run, and the rest of my life driving it.

I don’t have more than a few mp3s on my ipod and one of them is a recording of the engine of this car.
