You keep the flat cap; I’ll take the not flat thing under it.

I’ve always called them “ivy caps.” I just googled ivy cap the same Wikipedia “flat cap” link that GuanoLad posted came up!

I’ve always called them “Immigrant caps” or “Just-Off-The-Boat hats.”

I say that in a non-derisive way of course. I recall many of the Ellis Island photos of immigrants getting off the boats and so many of the men, regardless of their country of origin, can be seen wearing flat caps.

I own three of them by the way.

Why, that’s my hat!

> The wool 504 is the iconic, original Kangol cap. First introduced in 1954, the 504 cap gets its name from the block number that it is made on. The 100 percent seamless wool cap is the ultimate cap for comfort and style.

My friends call it a “paperboy hat,” which redirects to the “flat cap” on Wikipedia that **GuanoLad** suggested. For completeness’ sake, a drunk man once shouted that I was a “Reuben Studdard Hat-Wearing Motherfucker,” so I suppose that’s in the vernacular.

Flat caps are or were very common here in rural areas. My dad wore one and some of his brothers still do. Some of my cousins wear them too but in more “urban” style.

I always thought a newsboy cap was more baggy, like

[http://www.snarkstress.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/111907\_moore\_400x400.jpg](http://www.snarkstress.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/11/111907_moore_400x400.jpg)

or is that when it’s not attached at the brim?
