What kind of movie do you wish there was?

I want to see some astonishingly rich individual drive a dumptruck of money up to Terry Gilliam’s door and tell him to make the best movie he possibly can without regard to budget.

Think Brazil**…only, well, if not better…bigger.

“Don’t fight it son. Confess quickly! If you hold out too long you could jeopardize your credit rating.”

Effing brilliant. Just…unspeakably amazing.

I would dearly love to see a 21st-century analog to screwball or Billy Wilder-type comedy. Ideally starring Alicia Witt and some leading man who doesn’t strike me as a grown-up high school snotface.

I want an astonishingly rich individual to drive a dumptruck of money up to Terry Gilliam’s door and say “Make The Man Who Killed Don Quixote. Here you have enough money to buy the script and do whatever else you need to do. Let me know if you need more.”

I’d like to see a big-budget movie based on the Sharpe series by Bernard Cornwell. Take a cue from whoever did Master and Commander re: not raping the source material and remaining incredibly historically accurate, but since it’s Sharpe The Lone Wolf Officer Raised From The Ranks And His Merrye Men instead of just These Guys Floating Around, they’ll get to blow stuff up, gallivant across the Peninsula, and have a couple of big gigantic redcoat army vs French columns battles in addition to the Sharpe-led skirmishes, just like the books.

Also, unlike the BBC versions, this Sharpe will actually be cast to resemble Cornwell’s description of the character. Not blonde, not mullet.

Actual, I think there should be more Napoleonic War movies, period. There are all sorts of Regency romances available, but I want to see the redcoats blow stuff up with their field artillery and look dashing.

I was a big Doc Savage fan when I was a pre-teen. It would be cool to see a Doc Savage movie, but updated to modern times not the 30’s.

I’m also waiting for John Varley’s “Titan” trilogy to make it to the big screen.

I think the first book is one of the weakest, personally. O’Brian hadn’t quite crystallized his characters yet. Post Captain is far wittier, but has the long stretches of Romantic Entanglement that make it less interesting than some of the others. So I think - especially given that O’Brian himself relived the same year several times over in the writing of the books - the best thing to do would be to remake “Master and Commander” starting from the beginning - still borrowing elements from several of the other books, as this one did, but in a linear fashion that allows for sequels along the timeline and proper character development.

The lack of resolution in the movie rather annoyed me the first time I saw it, but it turns out that’s how the books end, too - no wrapping-up at all, just sailing past the horizon to the next harbour.

Directed by Uwe Boll I’m sure. :frowning:

A big, Hollywood epic (with the exception that it’d have a decent plot) based on the Johnstown Flood.

A film based on Fred Saberhagen’s Beserker series.

A decent adaption of any of Robert A. Heinlein’s works.

You’re breaking my heart! :frowning:

Given the history of the effort, I sincerely doubt that movie will ever be made. The attempt was such a disaster, even in comparison to Gilliam’s other challenges, that nobody is going to put up money to fund it. It’s sad, really, because Gilliam is clearly one of the most innovative, creative, visionary, and outright brilliant filmmakers of the 20th century. People talk about Welles, but they should rave about Gilliam. There’s no reason that guy shouldn’t have at least two movies in the AFI Top Ten. sigh

I hope The Brothers Grimm doesn’t disappoint. I look forward to it as much as I do the next Charlie Kaufman/Spike Jonze collaboration, and almost nothing else in comparison.

-8-bit Theater: The Movie.

-An anime-like “group of kids has to save the world” story where the characters have an ounce of sense and the dumbass who always wants to get into fights to “prove himself” is ritually and solomnly left to die, because he’s endangering the vital mission of saving the world.

-Quenta Silmarillion: The Movie. With a short introductary film a la “Crimson Permanent Assurance” detailing the Ainulindalë and Valaquenta, and maybe an extra on the DVD box set with the Akallabêth.

Would this be the one where Sauron tempts the Numenoreans to attack Valinor with filing cabinets?

I’d like to see the boundary between mainstream cinema and hard-core pornography utterly and permanently erased!

Oh, and more serious historical biopics.

Given the way O’Brian ended his books, I’d certainly have no objection to the end of the movies being not exaclty aligned with the end of the books. Sometimes they felt as if there were cut off mid-paragraph, as if the editor said “It’s long enough now, print it, we’ll put the rest in the next book.” So the movies could choose a more appropriate ending spot, or put in a touch of wrap-up; I’d be fine with that.

What I find very odd is that Far Side of the World, if I’m remembering it correctly, was a fairly complete story, with a definite and satisfying ending. Why did they remove that ending for the movie?

The worst part of the movie, for me, is that the actors didn’t capture the essence of the friendship. Perhaps it’s simply that a 2 hour movie can’t compare to 50 hours of book reading.

Um. Sorry about the hijack.

I’d love to see David Eddings’ Bellgariad and Mallorean in cinematic form…

I’d love to see David Eddings’ Belgariod and Mallorean as movies…both are great works of fantasy.

I’d like to see a really raunchy modern remake of some of the 50s Arabian Nights classics: Son of Sinbad, Captain Blood, Kismet, etc. I’d also like to see the same treatment given to the “Slave Warrior Maya” episode of the Cool Devices hentai series.
