Interesting. I love get yer goat and funeral too. I susupect we could start a thread about this. I do agree that pony was a more polished, mainstream album, and the songs didn’t hit, lyrically, quite a close to the bone as their earlier stuff. Heck, the song “Chocolate” is almost too personal for me to listen to now. I used to joke that the only positive thing that ever happened to any band in moving to a major was that Shudder stopped the, as one friend called it, “stream-of-bullsh*t prose”. Not that I hated this element of earlier albumns, it just didn’t do much for me. I guess it wasn’t until Pony that I got more into the angular style of music. I owned June of 44 engine takes to water for years without getting through it (big rodan fan), only to “rediscover” them later. I probably owe it to myself to dig out my Discord era shudder and listen again.
Pony kind of reminds me of how I felt about Built to Spill when “Keep it like a Secret” came out. They had built everything up with “Perfect…” then stripped it back down again. It’s a great pop album.
