> From Roman History, I’d say the battle of Allia and the later battle of Alesia still have some resonance, especially in France (I remember seeing a huge statue of Vercingetorix on one of my trips). Also, the battle of the Teuteberg Forrest I think still has some resonance today…but certainly, like Allia, it resonated with Roman citizens for hundreds of years after it was fought.

I was at the celebrations for the 2000th anniversary of the ‘Varus battle’ in the Teutoburg forest.

Funny how, for a long time, it was seen as a glorious victory of free germans over an oppressive Roman regime while nowadays Germans seem a bit sad that the Roman Empire wasn’t extended to the river Elbe.

All of the public favored the Romans in the re-enactment battles..

Thats true. But the penal laws which were introduced during the Jacobite wars did reduce the Catholic Irish to practically slaves in their own country. Without those laws you wonder if Irish nationalism would have taken such a deep root.

The Crusades never ended as far as the Muslims are concerned. The British Empire and the French in Algeria are just battles in the Crusades to them.

I’d say the American Civil War in the South.

The wars of the Roses is still a matter of some note between Lancastrians and Yorkists.

> The Wars of the Roses (1455–1487), known at the time and for more than a century after as the Civil Wars, were a series of civil wars fought over control of the English throne in the mid- to late fifteenth century. These wars were fought between supporters of two rival cadet branches of the royal House of Plantagenet: Lancaster and York. The wars extinguished the last male line of the house of Lancaster in 1471, leading to the Tudor family inheriting the Lancastri...

I still blame Edward III, for the way he brought up his children, for all 4 of the males to turn out to be murderous power hungry gits surely means he did something wrong on his practical parenting sessions.

The fallout of the Norman invasion led to land disputes and wars across almost a thousand years between England and France, and ultimately led to two world wars - nope, not the two you are thinking of, think of Marlbrough and the wars of Spanish succession, think also of the Napoleonic wars.

In turn, these wars dragged in Scotland, and Ireland, and many wars in various colonies.

I have wondered about this. Does it make sense for the French to identify with the Gallic tribes of that period when their culture and language owes far more to Roman civilization?

Still some tension between Thais and Burmese for any of a plethora of long-ago wars. The Thais are still particularly miffed about the Burmese sackings of the Ayutthaya kingdom in 1569 and 1767.

The Cambodians hate the Thais for all of the military incursions onto their territory over the centuries, if not millennia.

Not so much. We’re the descendants of Seth, not Cain.

But since I’ve personally seen teenage girls who are recent converts to Wicca going all apeshit about 'the burning times". I just figured it’d be wonderfully humorous to convince the same idiots to attack Christianity over the murder of Abel, the Original Vegan.

Yep, that was the first one to spring to my mind…

“A curse upon you Oliver Cromwell
You who raped our Motherland
I hope you’re rotting down in hell
For the horrors that you sent
To our misfortunate forefathers
Whom you robbed of their birthright
To hell or Connaught may you burn in hell tonight…”
(excerpted from _Young Ned Of The Hill_ by **The Pogues** )

My second thought was Culloden and the “Forty-Five”.

[QUOTE=Stephen King]
“Let me tell you something,” Garrish told Bogie. “God got mad at Cain because Cain had an idea God was a vegetarian. His brother knew better. God made the world in His image, and if you don’t eat the world, the world eats you. So Cain says to his brother, ‘Why didn’t you tell me?’ And his brother says, ‘Why didn’t you listen?’ And Cain says, ‘Okay, I’m listening now.’ So he waxes his brother and says, ‘Hey God! You want meat? Here it is! You want roast or ribs or Abelburgers or what?’ And God told him to put on his boogie shoes. So … what do you think?”

Oh, now, I really do just \*have \*to say “meh”. It is your own fault, you know, if you \*will \*bring sheep into it. 😃

Oh, and of course I do harbour a great feeling for the battle of Mons Graupius\* and that was very recent, being only in C.E 84 or so. 🙂 You know, because poor old Tacitus and Calgacus always come into it when we ever hear of some one getting annoyed by others doing things like putting pineapple on pizza. That way, you see, all can say “oh, but they have made a dessert and they name it pizza”.

Thank you, I will get my coat. 🙂

- and Culloden. And Bannockburn. And Flodden, since you ask. Oh well, so many wars and battles in history, blood and death and bad stuff, but I suppose occasionally they made good songs. How very sad or good.
