I have lurked and lurked forever, including at the old site before subscription. Time and again I will read threads that make me say, ‘that’s exactly what I would say/do, etc.’ My question is: What makes a Doper? Is it our level of education, geekiness, socioeconomic status? What brings us together to this site? I’m so comfortable at this site it’s kind of eerie. ---

I would have to say that a healthy sense of curiosity for lifes mysteries and the beating down of ignorance is a common bond. It’s a brutal world filled with too many sheeple and not enough shepards. Dopers are like the sheep dog. We redirect the mindless to get them to a safer place and the sheeple still run into a fence and wander out of their pastures. But it is fun running across their collective backs while chasing down the errant buffoon to nip it in the heels and stare it down with our freaky eyes. That’s just my analogy. I could be full of poo poo. ---

I think it takes a Doper to say “This is a Poll thread, and belongs in ‘ **In My Humble Opinion**.’”, or something equally annoying like that. ---

My political and religious views are way out of the mainstream here, and I am quite a bit older than most folks who are active on the SDMB. About the only things I have in common with most other Dopers are a rather offbeat sense of humor and a relentlessly curious intellect. For me, that’s enough to make me feel a kinship with members of this board. ---

I don’t think I fit the demographic: - I live at the arse-end of the planet - I’m a blue collar worker - I vote to the right - I tend not to get involved in the SDMB “once, in 1960-type” in-jokes. - Haven’t been to a Dopefest for years. - I don’t think I’ve ever said “and this is a General Question, how?” or anything like that. ---

I’d tell you the things that truly make one a Doper, the things you only get from the hand of Cecil himself when you submit yourself to his will completely and pay the $14.95, but then having told you I’d have to kill you. So I’ll just mention the hats. ---
