This would be a great retort, if the discussion at hand was over whether his actions met the legal definition of “posession with intent to distribute”. Anyone could look up the appropriate state and federal laws and post them, and that’d be it – assuming that were the purpose of this discussion.
If you are looking for a legal answer, Yes, you were a drug dealer.
If you are looking for rah, rah platitudes about draconian drug laws, you got that too.
Checking up with a few folk who are in jail for drugs offences, I can confirm that obtaining around £250 of any illegal drug is likely to lead to conviction for dealing.
If you break that down into small street deals it could make you double that if you chose your target well, but more likely much less you might make as little as £50, but that is all the prosecution needs to say, that there is a possible profit there.
I would say that you were a Peddler . However I wouldn’t ever think that you were a bad person for peddling pot. In my opinion you did your friends a great favor. I do not see how peddling pot to your friends would make one a criminal.
Legalize !
A possibly relevant aside: drug laws vary from jurisdiction to jurisdiction, of course. The definition of dealing under U.S. immigration law, though, includes any distribution of any quantity. So technically, if you give a friend one joint, even if no money is exchanged, you are still trafficking in narcotics.
